Please help with the reasons for trying to choose here!

Hi everyone, I have been trying to take in everything possible about diamond cut and what the angle combinations mean. I am 45 and after 20 years of marriage and 3 kids almost grown up I am finally getting my first diamond ring! Up till now I have been happily wearing a very simple gold ring with a small emerald which is beautiful in its own way. But the thrill of getting a diamond is really exciting and I want to get the best cut possible. Feel that after giving all my attension to the family and kids, time for something for me. lol

Here are 2 that my local jeweller brought in to show us. Both were eye clean and looked very pretty to my eyes. I am really interested to know from the experts here what the angles and %`s sort of predict as far as fire and leakage etc. And if these are indeed top cuts?

Both round brilliants are GIA cert.

Diamond number one

8.79 -8.84 x 5.45mm

2.60 carat
E color
Si2
Cut excellent

table 57%
35 degrees crown angle, 41 degrees pavillion angle

HCA = 2.4


Diamond number two

9.36-9.39 x 5.88mm

Cost of first diamond $35000, second one is $44000.

Thanks so much guys as I am doing my head in trying to work it out from the info here. The bigger diamond is less white (I guess) but more finger coverage. The smaller one of the two was very pretty and seemed quite lively. However, now that I know that poorer cut diamonds can look better in bright light that is coming from under the pavillion (leakage) I dont want to just trust my eyes.

I also have no idea if the price is on par with the online prices here as SI2 can vary alot plus other factors that cause prices to vary so much even with same specs.

Congrats on getting a new stone!

I think everyone on here will tell you that a 2-3 carat stone in an SI2 will NOT be eye clean. After waiting all this time for a diamond, you don't want to look down and see black marks on it. With a mid 30's budget, you can really find some beautiful stones. Give us a few minutes to make some recommendations...

stones over 2.0ct is something of its own animal. whiteflash has stones ranging from 2.5cts to 3cts with costs from 29,300-80,000


i agree you'll have a hard time eyeclean with that big a stone in a SI, but consider this worth a look. 2+ ct ACA from whiteflash

A PS member found this stone for circa $40k (he passed on it to get something with fluorescence). This is the type of incredible stone you can get for $40k.

My wife's stone was similarly priced, and weighs in at 2.33 carats and looks HUGE on her... So don't be discouraged by not being near 3ct with your fantastic budget.

You'll want Ideal Scope images of any stone you buy at this price.

I would agree with the guys that it would be better to go VS2 or SI1 in a stone that large. It may be a little tough to find a really clean SI1 in that size. But I'd so much rather have an overall well cut and good color/clarity stone than a large one that had visible inclusions even from the side.

Were those GIA graded diamonds?

Please please please can anyone here answer about the specific cut aspects of these diamonds. I wish I didn`t mention about the grade !!!!!

Lets say that I do go for a higher grade, I still would dearly love to have some knowledge about cut. And I really want to know if you can tell me about these 2 diamonds as a starting point for me to educate myself.


So assuming these stones were totally eye clean or much better grade, how do they compare with each other with cut and why?

And just to answer the question about if they are GIA certified. Yes they both have a GIA grading report from 2011.

Maybe they are eyeclean to Chloe?
She already saw those two diamonds in person and was fine with the clarity.
ETA: I would pick the one with better hca out of those two. The lower color doesn't bother me (obviously since I have a k!) actually g is not a low color at all. With a great cut it should still face up very white.
Plus it's bigger!

Thanks for that advice. Yes, they were eye clean to me and my husband. But now we are going to question how good our eye sight is!!!!

I am worried that the SI2 might be negatively effecting the `sparkle` or `smile` of the diamond even if it is eye clean?

I will buy that ideal scope for sure.

For the bigger diamond with score of 1....do the angles appeal to the experts, is it likely to be firey etc.

The angles are good on the second stone. It should be beautiful. A well cut G colored stone will still be very white. Look at the stone
under a lot of different lighting conditions (take it outside, bathroom, etc) and make sure it is eye-clean
enough for you.

I would like to see an aset image of the first stone. It could be fine too. Did you see a big difference between
the stones when viewing them or did you not see them side by side?

I went and bought an ideal scope today from Holloway Diamonds.

Need to thank them for selling it to me from their store instead of the internet.

Well will check out the diamonds tomorrow and will double check the SI2 eye clean part again.
