thanks julie,

This is my first (and hopefully last) foray into diamond buying, and it is a little overwhelming, so its great to get feedback from experts. In your opinion, do color grades below G detract from the appearance of the stone if the wearer prefers a colorless or near colorless diamond?

what is the size of the less colored stone in comparison, and where is it worn?

Also, near colorless is G-J

the less colored stones would be in the split shank pave ring surrounding the more colored examples you suggested as the center stone.

Near colorless is G-I. If she is color sensitive, then better listen to that. I''d stick with a nicely cut G, or an H. Depends on how color sensitive she is. Also has she seen really well cut stones?? Because if she hasn''t that makes a world of difference as well.

H should be fine in comparison to the (G?) melee. the little guys always look whiter, anyway.

One of the qualities that I love most about her, her low maintenance, has actually proven to make this endeavor even more difficult, as she basically has expressed preference for ring style (split shank pave) and general shape (princess). I don''t want to skimp on cut quality-- any thoughts on AGS ideal vs. GIA ideal (I know this a whole other can of worms). In the absence of her definite preference, I would rather err on the side of less color even if it means more money...she''s worth it!

there is no GIA ideal. GIA does not grade princess. they would not give a grade of "ideal."

ETA: ok, sorry, that was a useless post on my part. you surely mean GIA stones that are labeled "ideal" by the vendor. every vendor has their own criteria for what they want to call ideal. those vendors who just have some parameters, like a certain depth and table percentage, and l/w ratio, min pol and symm....that's not enough. numbers are all very well and good, but the whole point of an ideal cut is light performance, so back it up with an ASET or Ideal Scope, even Brilliance Scope or something... Yes, There are fine GIA princesses. Just get some kind of light performance information on it.
