HRD cert

2.01 I SI2
Polish: VG
Symetry: VG
Table: 57%
Depth: 63.5%
Crown %: 15.5
Pavillion %: 43.5
Girdle: 4.5 (medium)

Price = $12,700

I know that this is deep and therefore the spread isn''t great, but I''m not sure how much this will affect performance. I saw it and I guess it looks good, but its really hard to tell when you''re not used to looking at diamonds. I ran it through the HCA and it got a 5, which worries me. I bought an Idealscope and looked through that. Not dark red, but kind of a light red/pink with some white around the edges, but not all that much white.

I have a personal connection to this vendor and 100% trust him. He totally recommends this stone and stands by the color and clarity grade from HRD. I''m just a bit worried about the cut and the color/clarity. I was looking more for an H SI1, but this is what he has. I basically want something that is well cut, faces up white and looks eye clean.

What do people think of this diamond and the price?

Thanks!

abc123,

I plugged the numbers in DiamCalc and it shows corresponding crown and pavilion angles 35.7 and 41.0 degree correspondingly. Therefore, if crown and pavilion depth %''s are accurate, you should see quite a bit of white under the table in Ideal-Scope. Thus high penalty on HCA.

However, in reality these % might be rounded and not very accurate. Can you post measurements for the stone?

Yeah, having the measurements would help to see how much diameter you are losing because of the depth. I think if you want an H SI1, though, you should look for an H SI1. Even though you trust your vendor, if he doesn''t have what you really want, why buy there? I will add that you won''t likely get a well cut 2 ct. I color stone for $12,000. So you either need to go down in size or up in price to get a nice, well cut stone. I''d be a little afraid of SI2 in a 2 ct. stone, personally.

It is a steep/deep stone, but it''s on the bottom range of prices for 2 ct I SI2 that came up on the Pricescope search. So it''s a fair price. It does score around 5 on the HCA as you said so there will be some light leakage. I ran those numbers through GIA''s Facetware and and it came up with get a Very Good cut rating.

But you saw it in person and you''re in a better position to judge if it is "well cut, face white, and eye clean" enough for you. Good luck.

My thinking is that if it faces up like a 1.7 ct. stone, then you may as well pay for a 1.7 vs. a 2.0. But that''s why we need to see the measurements.

Thank you everybody for your replies.

Unfortunately I forgot to write down the measurements when I took down all the info yesterday. I remember it being right around 8 mm. I believe one of them was slightly under 8 and one was slightly over 8.

This guy did me a favor and took the diamond home with him for the weekend and I am going to his house to see it again. I''m going to be able to see it in more normal lighting this time and take it outside so hopefully I can make up my mind this time around.

Thanks again.

One more thing I forgot to add is that he said it faces up like a 1.95 because of the depth when I asked him about it yesterday.

if it's 8mm then it faces up significantly smaller than a 2c which is more like 8.2mm.

honestly a score like 5 on HCA isn't even worth a double look IMO. but the price IS lower so if you are looking for a low-cost diamond vs a well-cut stone, that's a priority thang, but keep in mind you get what you pay for. i'd much rather have a 1.75c stone for 12k that is exceptionally well cut than a small-facing dark looking 2c just to say it's a 2c.

here are two examples of stones that would most likely be better looking depending on their angles and to show price difference and spread of a well-cut stone.

This one below is almost spot on to your 2c I SI2 but the numbers are much better, AGS cert and it has the spread closer to a real 2c...for $800 more.

oh and not to sound too harsh, but that diamond that your 'trusted personal connection' is swearing by doesn't sound like a deal at all, esp after seeing what else is out there when i just looked online in the PS search engine (and seeing that 2c i just posted). i think that it's easy to get emotional while shopping, and be like 'we trust this guy' (we have done it before too), but those #'s and if he is swearing it's fab...i don't know. i'd trust my own knowledge over anyone else's anyday. get educated and then you can feel more confident!
