Please help - I am upset and in need of your advice! I notice a chip or small facet that I have never seen before. I have a radiant cut and it looks like a small corner of the table is missing. It is small but if I look closely I can see it without a loupe, especially if the light reflects off the table in the right way. It is not jagged in appearance but doesnt appear polished like the rest of the diamond''s surfaces. It looks like a tiny extra triangle facet on the corner of the table and I dont remember seeing this on the GIA cert (I dont have it with me). Also, I look at my stone under a loupe on a fairly regular basis and this is quite easy to spot through a loupe so I''m sure I would have noticed this before. I just saw the jeweler yesterday and had the prongs tightened (his suggestion) and ring resized. Is it possible that he did this damage while doing the work? Please tell me what I should do. Unfortunately, the diamond is not yet insured as I just got it 2 months ago.

why don''t you take the ring back in to the jeweler and have him look at it? it may or may not be something to worry about. whether or not he caused the damage, if there is any, is impossible to say. there could have been a chip that you didn''t notice initially.... it sounds as though this ring had a previous owner if you had to have it resized and the prongs tightened after only 2 months.

The first suggestion I''d make for you - is to determine whether the "triangle" or chip is in the stone, or if it breaks the surface.

To get this detail large enough to properly examine it, one should have a gemological microscope capable of enlarging the image so that the relevant detail can be seen.

If the jeweler you bought it from has a scope, then take the GIA report, and the stone, and examine it with him. (Hopefully he is a gemologist). If he isn''t then seek the services of someone who is and has the experience, and equipment to analyze this, and if possible determine the cause of the "problem".

Thanks for your replies but I''m very happy to report that it was a false alarm! Turns out it is an extra facet and is shown on the GIA report.... whew!
