For the last few months I have been reading this forum and it has really helped me to understand and appreciate diamonds, yet until now, I never thought that this might be more of a curse than a blessing.
For a little while now I have been gearing up to to the big day when I can ask the woman I love to marry me and present her with something truly special. Like many people I have been putting away money, planning the moment... About two months ago, I shared my excitement with my Mom who mentioned that she had a family stone that belonged to my great-great grandmother. The stone is significant because it was the main stone in her engagement ring, she was the family matriarch and her marriage by all accounts was a magical one that stood the test of time for 50+ years. Needless to say I was excited to learn about it and thought it would be a dream to use it. Over the years, the stone was parted from the original setting and placed in a necklace that was passed down between the women in my family for generations. My Mom lives in another city, but she agreed she would take it to a very esteemed jeweler to have him look at it. When the jeweler went to remove the stone he found that it was damaged and that the damage itself was hidden by the current setting. It was agreed by all that once it was removed it would have to be recut.
This is how an old european cut stone was recut by a man with a good deal of talent into a round brilliant. Unfortunately a 1.7 carat stone had to be fashioned down to 1.27 carats but so goes life. My issue is not with the cut (now near ideal), carat, or the clarity (VS2), it is with the color. It turns out that although the stone has yet to be fully certified, it appears to be an M or N rated stone.
The color is only exacerbated by the fact that my girlfriend wants the diamond set in a platinum ring with pave surround and a pave band. I realize that a yellow tinted diamond can be set in yellow gold to good effect, but this is not an option and my gf is set on a pave ring. I am concerned that this stone will not work in the ring we had dreamed about.
Here is where I need some advice. Know that there is not a lot of pressure to use the stone. My family would like it if I did, but they nicely realize it may not work. Know also that I have money put aside and in the end can afford to buy a very nice stone if necessary.
Do you think a can use this family stone in my dream ring? Can pave stones of similar color be matched...? What should I do?
Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it.
