I have been searching for engagement rings online for about 2 months now. I have come across a website that has diamonds listed at extremly low prices. The diamond that I am looking at has the GIA cert. but im still a little skeptical. The diamonds info:

Shape: Princess
Carat Weight: 1.01
Color: H
Clarity: IF
Graded By: GIA
Cut Grade: Premium

Depth: 70.7%
Table: 74%
Girdle: Medium to Very Thick
Culet: None
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 5.77 x 5.49 x 3.88
Length / Width Ratio: 1.05

whats the catch and why is it only costing 4,340? is this a semi-accurate price for an appraisal? I just dont want to be taken advantage of!

where is the best place to find a diamond at a cheap price?

thanks,
brian

Mnkystarnes14, welcome to the forum.

If you run a price comparison for this specs from the front page, you'd see several Internet vendors list this diamond for prices ranging from $4240 to $4537. This diamond is listed on the virtual trading network. See DenverAppraiser article: Why are there several dealers offering the exact same stone?

Price you mentioned seems reasonable but, as always, only real expert examination can give you real evaluation.

thanks for the welcome!

I just saw the list of diamond providers on the front page. somehow missed that i guess?

on this huge list of diamonds is there certain guidelines that i should use in order to find the perfect princess cut?

what would be the perfect cut?

thanks,
brian

Hi mnkystarnes14,

I''m not sure what exactly you are looking for in terms of cost, size, clarity, etc. and there are some other princess experts out there that can comment further, but you can probably find a better diamond by going with a better mix of color and quality for that size. "IF" is the best you can get clarity wise but is a bit much - you would spend less and get a really good stone if you got a VS2 or SI1 that is eyeclean. G or H color should be fine for the color. I wouldn''t pay more for IF over VS2 - I would rather spend the money on a better cut or more carats. I would also look for a table that is smaller than the depth and in the high 60''s with a depth in the low 70''s for a princess.

Whiteflash has some Expert Selection AGS certified diamonds with Idealscope and Sarin data that will give you a better ideal of how the diamond performs. GOG also provides the data as to other PS vendors when you request it.

If you post the price range, size, color, clarity, etc that you are looking for the PSers can offer some links to good stones that might be a better value over the IF clarity - unless IF clarity is a must for you.

Hey Brian. Welcome to PS.

Unlike round diamonds, the performance of fancy shapes can't be predicted using only numbers.
People with expertise can recommend a favored range of parameters, and it is possible to make broad conclusions from photography and reflector images, but these shapes must be seen live for decisive evaluation. You can gather numbers, magnified photos, a reflector photo (ideal-scope or ASET) and other info and post the data for comments, but it's best to work with an expert you trust - seller, appraiser or both - to assist you with ultimate selection.

FYI: The American Gem Society introduced light performance grading for the princess in 2005. This is the only major lab grading the princess shape for cut, and the 0 'Ideal' grade has proved a reliable guideline for assuring a high level of performance sight-unseen. The AGS pedigree is still a relatively new development, so few diamonds are being sent to AGS for this rating compared to the number sent to the GIA or other labs. Those being graded by other labs can be equally beautiful and perform equally as well, so there are many choices.

Tdiddy's recommendation is best. Post your specific wants, as far as the Cs and budget (if you're comfortable sharing it) and the knowledgeable PS members will offer up options they deem worthy.

WOW! thanks for all that information. I thought I knew a bit of info on this diamond stuff but you guys are making my head spin ;)

the ideal engagement ring would be: a princess diamond: the best cut and color possible around the 1 ct zone or larger

with a band that is 3mm and tapers to the diamond(no knife) to about 2.5mm

My girlfriend fell in love with a James Avery ring that has the same setting but is a round diamond= its was ridiculusly expensive for NO reason!

she would like the same setting(size 5) with an amazing princess diamond

I dont want to spend no more than 5000 all together.

I hope this is enough info to give me feedback?

thanks alot for all your help guys, I really appreciate everything.
