hi there ,

i didnt know where to post this but i thought i would post it in this section. i hope you can help.

my bf bought me my first pair of diamond stud earrings from a manufacturing jewellers who his friend advised him about. he got them to make me a pair of stud earringhs 0.72 carat and i love them. The thing is i just want to ask should there be any paper work that comes with it as the only paper work that came with the earrings were valuation for insurance purposes that stated how much they were worth and also the carat size. i wondered if it should come with paper work to say the cut, clarity etc? as i do not know of the proceedures could someone please explain to me when they go to get their jewlery made from a manufacturer instead of going to the high street stores and paper double the price.

Many Thanks

The retailer who sold it to you, whether they call themselves a manufacturer or anything else, should be providing a written statement describing what you bought, including the grading on the stones. This is the primary use of the ‘appraisal’ they provided but a detailed receipt is at least as good and possibly better. If it’s not there or if you have some reason to believe that what they’ve told you is wrong or misleading then you should get an independent appraisal.

It’s also worth noting that if the value conclusion on the document they gave you is significantly different from the transaction price, this is a red flag that there may be other problems. At the least, it’s not in your best interest to bind an insurance policy with incomplete or inaccurate information. It just raises your premiums without affecting the payout in the case of a loss.

That stone is probably ungraded which is also sold at a discounted price. Jewelers usually do not send a stone to be graded because there is something wrong with the stone which will drastically reduce the worth of the stone. Best to get it independently appraised if it is worth some $$.

thank you so much for all your advice. if i was to get in touch of the manufactuer what should i ask for in terms of documents sorry if i sound clueless im still new to this and i dont want to get ripped off.

many thanks

Ask if the stones comes with a grading report, preferably by GIA or AGS, which probably did not as by right it should come with the stones, or is it graded in-house.

All you need to do is ask if the diamonds have a lab report such as GIA or other, and if not who graded or appraised them.
