So I could really use some help here. My girlfriend of six years and I are ready to make things official. However, for certain reasons we need to be engaged in the next two months - not really flexible here. Therefore, I need to get a ring ordered much sooner than later.
I have been shopping all around town with her and we have come to the conclusion that she likes a more antique style ring with pave (think the Tiffany Legacy). She isn''t as concerned with the center stone but would prefer something along the lines of a cushion or ascher. My budget is in the $15-20K range.
I could really use some feedback on a couple of questions.
1. There is a beautiful ring on an estate jewelry website that has a photo of a ring that I know she would love. I will try to attach a photo as well.
The description of the ring :"The center stone is a cushion cut diamond that weighs 2.48 carats and is EGL certified. The color of the stone is I and the clarity is SI1. The center stone is enhanced by approximately 0.75ct of small old mine cut diamonds around it. The color of the side diamonds is G and the clarity is VS1. The ring features beautiful open work gallery. The ring is size 7 1/4, but can be resized. " Price = $18,500
She likes the idea of having a real antique but I don''t want to compromise quality too much in order to make that happen.
How sketchy is it to buy an EGL certified ring? Is the price too good to be true here? I would actually go to the store to make sure I liked the ring but it is about five hours away and I would assume save myself the trip if people think something is up.
Other questions -
So my girlfriend is not too into name brands but like any girl, would love something from Tiffany or Harry Winston. If I was going to purchase a ring for $20K, what kind of stone could this get me from these two outfitters? Again, I could drive to these places to actually see the stones but want to know what I am getting myself into.
In looking in some local stores, I have found a couple of designers that are lesser known (Mark Patterson) and seemingly much cheaper than the previously mentioned - partly because the settings are not hand made. I could get the ring for under $3K and save the rest for the stone. Anyone have any thoughts here on how important it is to have something hand made versus (whatever non-hand made is called)? Anyone know of any other designers that would fall into this category of having nice settings similar to the Legacy for reasonable prices.
Finally, any opinions between ascher versus cushion cut?
Okay - if you are still reading, thank you so much. As you can tell, I am a very nervous guy these days trying not to screw up on a big purchase. Thanks in advance.
