Hello Pricescopers
I am looking to buy an engagement ring for my lovely lady but I need your help.
Unfortunatly our budget has been reduced recently and I am hoping to get her a beautiful ring for about 3500 .I have been looking on James Allen and a girl from Diamond pro helped me out with a few details.we will have to pay custom tax of about 500 eurs so I think our final budget is 4000.Honestly considering our situation,it would be great to get the whole ring and customs for 3500 if possible but from what I have seen, its not possible with this carat size.
I know she would like a pave setting so I understand that the diamond should be an I colour or above.
In your expert opinion is an I colour sufficent or will it still show some yellow, should I go up to a H and get a smaller diamond.
How important is clarity -i see details written in the GIA report about feather ,pinpoint but no idea if this will impact the diamond or not.I understood that the cut is the most important so have been just selecting the excellent cut .

I have three diamonds -two princess cut and one round .I am also attaching the setting and would really love to get your feedback on that too

If anyone out there has any opinions or advise, please please let me know,I need help with this guys!! :)

Thanks in advance ,have a good day!
Bewildered !!

Re: Please Help -need your expert opinion -seriously undecid

O.K a few questions to clarify. Did she ask for a princess cut specifically? If not then I would go with a Round brilliant unless she says she loves princess cuts as they look NOTHING like each other, and be aware princess cuts face up smaller than round brilliant cuts do....

If she asked for pave did she ask for pave on the shank of the ring only or is she expecting a pave halo?

Re: Please Help -need your expert opinion -seriously undecid

hey arkie,

Thanks so much for your quick reply -she does like princess cuts but would like round as well, its between the two,she doesnt have a strong preference and I heard that round shine up more??
you made a good point about the face up showing smaller -so probably it would be best to go with the round cut ?

Re: Please Help -need your expert opinion -seriously undecid

Sorry whats the difference between pave on the shank or halo
:)

Re: Please Help -need your expert opinion -seriously undecid

Pave in the shank only is diamonds only in the band part (like your example ring above), pave in halo and shank is diamonds in the shank (band part) & diamond halo around the centre stone like this;

Some ladies like pave in the shank only so the ring looks less plain other ladies when they refer to wanting pave actually are talking about pave around everything.

Re: Please Help -need your expert opinion -seriously undecid

Thanks!! Showing my ignorance here!!,so its definitely pave on the shank setting.
Considering your advise that the princess cut generally can look smaller than the round brilliant ,would I be better going with that .82 carat I had in my original query ? Would it look bigger than the .9 princess ?

Also regarding my queries on the colour and clarity, would you have any opinion there ?

Sorry ..so many questions ..

Re: Please Help -need your expert opinion -seriously undecid

I don't like the I color round you posted. It has a definite brown color and higher clarity than you want in order to max out your budget. Let me see what else I can find. What are you looking to spend on the stone? Setting?

Re: Please Help -need your expert opinion -seriously undecid

Another option would be to take advantage of the sale enchanted has going. Settings are 10% off and diamonds 1% off. You probably won't get into the 0.8 carat range but would end up with a nicer, more detailed setting. Here are a couple settings you may like:

And a few diamonds to consider:

https://enchanteddiamonds.com/diamonds/view/R71-24S8P7
https://enchanteddiamonds.com/diamonds/view/R75-14LEZW my favorite because the included ASET looks great.

Hi Pfunk

Thanks so much for all your help, really appreciate the pricescopers opinions..
I had a look and those settings were really great, but I think they are unfortunately out of our range.we have to stay within 4000 eurs, and that includes 500 eurs for custom tax when it enters the country,so looking at about 3500 eurs which is now more or less 3500 usd.

I am thinking about maybe going down in carat size to .70 + and increasing the colour to H or G ,got these three from a rep at james allen and he said they are all eye clean ?? By the way he said that anything above a Vs2 is eye clean -is that correct in your opinion ?

I know she would like to get the pave setting ,but the side stones in the shank are f-g colour and am afraid the center stone will look less brilliant

These are the three carats in .70 + and below are the two settings

Sorry again for all the questions, but thank for being so helpful .I think the setting is really important especially if the carat size is being reduced ,he said the thin band would make the diamond look bigger, but am not sure ..its really thin.

Do you or anyone else have an recommendations on these diamonds and the settings ?

Thanks again

Re: Please Help -need your expert opinion -seriously undecid

Thank you 16ocean,that is a beautiful diamond.
Maybe if I find a great setting, the carat will look bigger ,I posted two earlier to pfunk ,both white gold French pave ,but I am not sure these settings are going to make the diamond look bigger ?

Re: Please Help -need your expert opinion -seriously undecid

16ocean,sorry just saw your second post, her ring finger is 14 European so think that is 6.5 to 7 -just googled a comparison table

Re: Please Help -need your expert opinion -seriously undecid

A few things here. I would not be too worried about an I color diamond contrasting too much against the diamonds in the pave setting, especially in diamonds that small. Your center stone will not look out of place, so I wouldnt be worried about the I color.

As far as the setting goes, the first is only 1.7mm wide. That is a REALLY skinny, petite band. I myself would prefer something 2mm or larger especially in a pave shank.

Of the three stones you posted, the only one that has numbers that I would be comfortable with is the first one. But it also has the very good symmetry rating which I would wonder about without an ASET or idealscope image. Also, it too has a greyish brown tint to it that I would ask the reps about. I'd want to know if it is noticeable.

The other two both have angle combinations that are not my favorite with crown angles of 35 and pavilions of 41. Those can lead to some leakage. With a crown of 35 I would prefer to see the pavilion at 40.8 or 40.6. These play well together (steep w/shallow is better than steep with steep)

They may still have decent performance, but it is less likely than other combinations and you would need to get idealscopes to confirm this. James Allen will only allow you to request idealscope images on 3 stones, so I would recommend against using them on combos that arent likely to perform well.
