I everyone.

First and foremost, apologies for all questions whose answers are already on other forums--its just too difficult to get all the information in a concise place.

So the here is the 411:
In February, I bought from Costco, a Lady''s platinum , diamond solitaire ring, the center containing one round brilliant cut diamond weighing .7 cts, the clarity being VS-2 or better, and the diamond color being 1 or better. It is appraised by the gemologist with her signature, to be valued at $5400.

Here is the issue. My fiancee is from Beirut. She is coming here in the fall, however, in order to be able to see each other before then, we decided to have a rendez-vous vacation in Paris, where I would officially propose to her. This vacation is coming up soon.

I finally found her ring size which is quite small, its a 5. The Costco ring is about a 9, hence the reason for my following questions:

1. Can I trust a big name--like Barmakian, to keep my ring for a couple of days, without them swapping the diamond?

1. Wherever I go to make it smaller, how can i be assured they dont swap out the diamond. From reading forums, they say I can ask to look at a before-picture through microscope to look at inclusions and an inscribed #?? Will the jeweler let me do this? And then will he/she sign something saying the before-picture characteristics--to compare with after-picture??

2. How can I make sure that when they are shrinking the ring, they dont "de-purify" the platinum with other metals....I think there is a "Girdle" number which I can look at before-and-after, but how does that prove they did not mix with other metals?

3. Since I need the ring to be shrunk, theoretically there should be access Platinum taken out, no? Are they supposed to give me this access platinum, or do they keep it? Platinum is expensive, I dont want them to just keep it.

4. Since a smaller ring will be less platinum, will the value of the ring be reduced, if lets say, I brought it afterwards, to an independent appraiser?

Thanks everyone...

Welcome to PS, VG1

Are you sure about the ring size? Here is what I see on the Costco (Canada) website on every ring I pull up:

Ring Size: 7 (sizeable within 2 sizes - Costco does not provide this service)

Is it possible it''s a 7 not a 9? (ie: you may be thinking a 9 because of the ''sizeable within 2 sizes'' comment?)

If it IS a 9, I would be hesitant to resize it to a 5 without having an experienced jeweller look at it. To go down 4 sizes is a LOT.

If it''s a 7, shouldn''t be a problem, if it is a plain platinum band, which is what it sounds like.

I would say you first need to check with a reputable local jeweler and make sure the ring can be sized down that much. 4 sizes even on a plain setting is a lot. are you sure it's a 9? most stores stock a size 6 or 7. a size 9 is well above the average woman's finger size.

okay, to answer some of your questions:

1) no reputable jeweler is going to risk jail time and their entire business just to swap your stone. really not likely at all to happen if you are dealing with a respected establishment.

2) you can have the jeweler help you learn to recognize your diamond. did it come with a cert? you can have an appraiser compare the diamond to the cert after you have the resize done. again, odds are no one is going to switch your stone..

3) yes, they will scrap the extra platinum. what would you do with it anyway? you can't really reuse it...

4) no, the value of the ring should not be reduced just because it was sized down. but please do verify with a jeweler that the ring can indeed be sized down that much. you may be better off seeing if they will take the setting on a trade and purchase something similar that is made in her size.

ETA: LostSapphire posted while I was typing but I ditto her response. I personally don't think I'd attempt to even size a plain plat ring down 4 sizes.
