SGL is Rich Sherwood''s lab. Rich is an appraiser extraordinaire who posts here. If he gives that diamond his seal of approval , then the answer to number 2) and 3) is yes. Still you might consider having another look at it for chipping etc. since it was last appraised.

Agreed. Rich is super nice, you can call him, mention the appraisal, and see what HE has to say about it. But if Richard says it''s great, I am sure it is.

And there is a premium for the Square H&A stones, so the price seems fine.


AND a Square H&A does usually say ''cushion brilliant'' on the cert. But a reg. cushion brilliant and square h&a stone have VERY VERY different looks. If it''s a reg. cushion brilliant, the price is ok, but certainly not the deal of the century. If it IS a square H&A stone, then it''s a better deal. Were the pics you uploaded THE RING? Or did you just find them somewhere?

ETA: I missed about the MWM setting. If it is the setting you are going to use, it is a MUCH MUCH better deal because his settings are not cheap. If you will change it out, then I stand by my assessment above.

If Rich recommends it that highly, I would snag it if I were you ESPECIALLY if the setting is part of the deal and you plan on using it...

Well, I think it''s been confirmed that it''s a great stone and a great price for that kind of stone in a MM setting! Now, have you thought about how your gf will feel about having a "used" ring? Is the sale because of a divorce? Some would have NO problem with that, others would.

Well, I''ll be honest with her that it was a ''used'' ring, but my gut tells me that she wouldn''t have a problem with it. Actually she was quite content with a lifesaver on her ring (imagine that...even if that was possible) provided it came with my promise to love her forever.

It is actually me that has spent (what I would consider) an INSANE number of hours trying to understand stones...yet I still call myself a novice.

My fear is that I am a student and that if I spend the usual "10% of my salary" I''d be in big trouble...My intentions were to find her the stone and setting that were the best in my price range (as I''m sure everyone else here is) but it had to be for her and MY satisfaction...and about me...well I am a worry wort and I''ve always had bad luck with large purchases....

Which is why I have to say THANKS to everyone thus far...I''m sure I''ll come back with still more questions...but until then...thanks!

Question about insuring the ring: Once I have the ring, whom is the best agency (based on experience) I need to contact for insuring the ring/wedding band? The ring is GIA certified / SGL certified in 2004 - being that it is a few years old, would I need to ''re''appraise it again?

Speaking of - do you guys think I should have it reappraised for my own satisfaction since it is a "used" ring? If so do you know how long it takes to get it recertified by GIA? Is it as simple as a walk-in somewhere and takes a few hours only?

You can re-appraise it if you want, for your own piece of mind...but I wouldn't get it GIA certified again. It's kind of pointless if you don't plan on selling the ring, it costs a few hundred dollars, and 2004 wasn't THAT long ago. lol (and I think it takes a couple of weeks)
I can't answer your question on how to get it insured though. I would use the search feature and find out what other's do to insure their stones.

I would reappraise the ring with an Independent appraiser (not the GIA lab - that is called recertification) as the prices of diamonds has gone up quite a bit since 2004, including the price of platinum. Perhaps, Richard Sherwood would be a good choice? The new reappraisal will help update the value of the ring for insurance purposes.

Oh I see. Then the price makes sense when it is in a Mark Morell setting AND 2 accent PINK diamonds.

Thanks for all your help Rich. Yeah, I stumbled accross it about a week ago. I hope to have it in my hands later tomorrow.

To ALL - From my conversations with Rich (and from those who speak highly of him in the Pricescope Community), I have to say that he is a distinguished example of an ideal appraiser and a fine gentleman who (for me) took the time out to speak with me on the phone, even during his busy schedule to provide me peace of mind and an unbiased, objective opinion!!

Yeah, my gf''s size is 5.5 versus the ring, which is size 6. I plan on having it resized somewhere locally, since Mark is located in Boston and I am in NJ.

I''m still not sure what''s the best way to insure the ring...meaning, what''s the best insurance company around for something like this ring...Any Thoughts??

Hello ALL,

So I finally got the ring and proposed to my GF...she said "YES" (with capital letters!!)

Don''t know exactly who has actually followed the whole thread thus far (the one I started), but I do have a small dilemma:

1) I live in Philly and since it is an online purchase, I would like to have it reappraised...I plan on going to the ''diamond district'' tomorrow am sharp and don''t really know how to approach this scenario to one of the stores there...(i.e. Robbins Diamonds, etc)....do I ask them to have it visually appriased? BTW - the ring/stone came with all certifications, including GIA and SGL appraisals...it''s a Cushion Briliiant, Super-Ideal Cut (H&A - with pics to show that it is true H&A), 0.95 Carat, VS2, E, and mounted on a Mark Morrell Platinum setting - I beleive I got a FANTASTIC deal...almost too good to be true, BUT the GIA cert is 2004 and a SGL inspected in late 2004...since then, I don''t have a ''history'' of what the ring has been through in terms of how it has been ''treated''...SO how do I go about doing this?

2) Also, I need to get the ring resized...how long does that take? And are there any steps I need to make sure I get the same diamond (i.e. stone) back??

3) How much do 1) and 2) cost on average?

I can''t answer #1, but I did just look into having my ring resized. I was looking at sizing beads, which are a less permanent way to resize. I chose them because I want to have a little bit of "growing room" as I get older. The price for platinum was a little over $100, and several jewelers have said it will take about a week. I think it''s a pretty easy thing to do, so if you''re lucky you may be able to find someone who can do it for you in an afternoon.

Make sure you loupe your diamond before you give it to them, and after you get it back, BEFORE you leave the store. A VS2 should have some inclusions that you can use to identify your stone. You should check to make sure it''s yours, and also that there are no chips or other damage.

Yes!! I got the ring (stone and setting) at that price...it was such a steal that I want to have it recertified or something just to feel better about myself!
