I have been searching for a square radiant cut diamond around 1 carat or so and have been working with an out of town jeweler. They sent me an email with the GIA certificate with the following description today:

Shape and Cutting Style: Cut-Cornered Square Modified Brilliant
Measurements: 5.55 x 5.55 x 4.13

Carat Weight: 1.08
Color Grade: G
Clarity Grade: VS2

Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: None
Cutlet: None
Girdle: Slightly Thick - Thick

Table %: 66%
Total Depth %: 74.4%

I have not seen this diamond, but just going by the above measurements and description, what do you guys think about this diamond? Also, what is a square modified brilliant? Is it the same thing as a radiant cut diamond (which is what I am looking for)? How do the table and depth % measurements look? Lastly, what would be a good ballpark figure for me to pay for this above diamond?

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

use the search tool just above where you are reading.

You will find most radiants have less depth / more spread.

GIA have some odd (dumb?) terminology they think sounds very anal and scientific.

It is deep and has a large table. It also has a thick girdle.

Likely as not, it looks okay, but will it be a super stone? Probably not. More toward average is a lot more likely. It is an unusual radiant cut that really is an effective stone. Many are not so wonderful.

You need to examine such stones with your own eyes. You also have to see a few well cut ones BEFORE you make a final choice. The excellent ones, though hard to locate, are way better than the norm in terms of looks.

If you haven''t already been, you definitely need to go to this site
http://www.radiantcut.com/

This is the Original Radiant Cut branded radiant diamond. Look at the graphs to see what the preferred peramiters are for this great looking branded radiant.

If you have all the specs (including Crown%) go to this link, select "radiant" cut and plug in your numbers to get some idea of what grade it is.

Lastly, the numbers and charts will help you weed out stones that will likely be duds. BUT, they are not the final determining factor in a radiant cut.

I am NOT an expert, just an owner of a 3 stone radiant ring, that I just love. My husband and I looked at so many radiants, I lost count. It was not easy, and at times, I almost gave up the quest. But in the end I was happy I stuck it out.

Ultimately, as with all fancy shapes, you need to let your EYES do the picking. When you see the right one, you''ll know it. The more stones you see, the more you''ll discern the differences.

There is no ideal number to shoot for, just peramiters of likely candidates. Many people will pay premium prices for an Original Radiant Cut, others try to find a non branded stone that can be just as pretty, albeit harder to find.

Do your research, decide what 4 C''s are important to you and what you are willing to compromise on and what you are not.

Good luck. Radiants are a beautiful stone with looks that vary from crushed ice/broken glass, to a more faceted modified princess looking cut. You need to see them to decide what YOU prefer.

Enjoy the hunt!!!
