I would like to buy a 1 ct diamond for my girlfriend. Sparkle is the most important thing to her. Through this website I have found out that cut and proportions are the most important thing to look at. I am not against buying online, however I have been working with a local jewler who has called in multiple stones for me to look at. He is also going to make us a custom band so I would like to give him the business, if he can be competitive. I prefer an eye clean SI1 stone with white as opposed to black inclusions. I would prefer to stay in the F-G color range because I am sensitive to the color differences.

I have been looking at the following stone....

EGL NOT USA

1.00 ct
Measurements 6.47 - 6.38 x 3.90

Proportions
Depth 60.8%
Table 60%
Crown Height 14%
Pavilion Depth 43%
Girdle Medium, Faceted
Polish very good
symmetry very good
culet none
SI 1 with white feather prongable off to the side
Color E
Fluoro none

He is asking $5800...is this a fair price...if not what would it be...i am also open to other suggestions

Thank you in advance to anyone willing to take their time to help me

I went to www.jamesallen.com and just plugged into their search a look for a 1ct round brilliant diamond. E in color. SI1 in clarity and Ideal cut. All were GIA graded stones and anywhere between $5,100 to $5,800. So if I were you I wouldn''t purchase that stone unless I saw it in person and was crazy about it. I think you''ll find that a lot of people on here don''t completly trust and EGL graded diamond. Sometimes their grading is soft. I personally would not buy anything other than a GIA or AGS graded diamond for an ering. If you do purchase it, it would be wise to have it appraised by an independent appraiser. I would just hate to see you spend that amount of money and find out that it''s maybe a G in color and an SI2 or I1 in clarity

What i''ve learned on here is that the best EGL lab is the USA one. Which EGL lab was it graded by? I see you have not USA listed under the EGL. Some of those James Allen stones did cost the same as this one, but since they are graded by GIA you can be pretty sure what your cert says is what the diamond is.

May I ask why your doing an E in color? Nothing wrong with it at all, just curious. If you wanted a larger diamond you could probably go a little bit bigger or get a better cut if you went down to like a G.

do you have the crown and pavilion angles?

I would prefer to go lower in color...but its the best stone he has been able to get in for me

I understand the liberal grading of EGL...and i''m sure thats how he makes his margins....but since he has spent so much time on us i would really like to give hime the business...but i''m not willing to get ripped off in doing so....what is the best approach to take....low ball offer???...or have him keep searching for stones...or tell him i''m going to buy online if he can''t do any better?

i don''t have any angles....

Sorry, I went

there. Yes, that is an overpriced stone. The markup of a B&M is never worth it to me.

I understand wanting to stay loyal to a good jeweler. Does he only carry EGL stones? Could you ask him if he could get some GIA or AGS graded stones for you?

Barring seeing this stone in person and being knocked out by it, I would not purchase it. I went to the Knowledge section of this forum and plugged your numbers into the HCA. You can go look at it yourself, it''s not an exact thing, especially since you only had %''s and not angles but according to what I found on there I would probably think the stone was too expensive for what it is. After plugging in your numbers this is what it said:

Factor Grade
Light Return Very Good
Fire Very Good
Scintillation Very Good
Spread
or diameter for weight Very Good
Total Visual Performance 2 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right

People usually like staying under a 2 when using that thing. Considering you could go online and get something graded by a more dependable lab and cut better, hence more sparkles, for the same price or less....I would not get it. But thats just me. Have you looked at it yet?

The data suggests an EGL Israel cert. Just be careful...Not long ago a poster stated his/her stone was 2 grades off in color and 2 in clarity.
Price is ok considering we''re talking about B&M...IF it''s E/SI1. It wouldn''t be that good a deal if it were G/I1.

He got in a couple GIA that were the same price...but were H in color in a similar cut.....wasn''t that thrilled about them....this EGL has had the most sparkle thus far

Well if I were you and didn''t like the other ones as much, even though they were GIA, I would not worry about them. UNLESS....how did you view the stones? Were they just in the store lighting? Did you get to view them in sunlight? or under different kinds of light? So if you get to do that and still don''t like the other GIA stones, then don''t worry about them. If you really love this EGL stone, I would ask what the return policy is on it. I don''t know if jewelers will let you get something appraised before buying. If they do thats what I would do. If not and they have a decent return policy where you could have enough time to get it appraised (by an independant appraiser of course) and get all your money back, then thats what I would do. You would have to pay for the appraisal though, but if you really like this stone and want to stay with this jeweler than I suppose it would be worth it. That just seems like a lot of cash for that stone, if it turns out to not be exactly what it says it is.
