What do you think about this G colored diamond?

Please read about the inclusion below. Would you worry about a “miniscule” cavity on the girdle, which can be covered up with a prong?

OK, here are the full details from a SARIN analysis:

COLOR = G (from GIA cert.)
Weight = 1.502 Ct
Diameter = 7.37 (7.35 – 7.40)
Total Depth = 60.9%
Crown Angle = 35.0 (34.7 – 35.4) [AGS = 0]
Crown Height = 14.7% (14.4 – 14.9)
Pavilion Angle = 40.7 (40.2 – 41.2)

Cavity on the girdle.
I have been told the following about the cavity, “The cavity is absolutely miniscule and on the Girdle as we thought from the certificate. If the diamond is mounted properly it can be completely covered with a prong and you won''t even have to worry about the dirt issue.” I have also been told that the cavity “…will NOT spread.”

Looks good!! I see you are still considering the cavity stone.

I believe the clarity was SI1 but the cavity was the only inclusion?




You should post the GIA cert so that people can see for themselves the cavity is almost non-existent on the plot. If it won't spread (experts??) then I say go for it! The price and cut look great and you can maximize size and get a great cut for a low price because of the inclusion (which you can set).

I've followed a few threads concerning the cavity on this stone (and
find it very interesting)... I'm curious as to whether what mara said:

"...but the cavity was the only inclusion?"

is true or false for this SI1 stone. I have experience with other
condition sensitive collectibles (but not with stones)...

So without hijacking this thread, I'm wondering whether there is a
hirearchy to inclusions (regardless of size).... such that a stone with
XXXXXX inclusion cannot be given a clarity grade higher than YYYY of
course the grade could be lower if there are other inclusions present)

helpful of course is the list of inclusions.

Hello All,

I posted this topic late last night, so I would really appreciate it if people would chime in today. I have a slightly different plan now.

If I decide to buy this diamond, in part based on the feedback that I get from the forum, I will go to AGA in Philly with the unmounted diamond, have it appraised, assuming everything checks out, then have it laser inscribed, then set for me there.

Since the cavity is the last charateristic listed on the GIA report, this makes me believe it's very small. The stone looks great... Bring it to an appraiser and see what he thinks. But I suspect it's a ball of fire and the cavity is almost negligible.

Diamond Bob did say not to mount the cavity under a prong so it can be kept clean. That way, only you will know it's there.

I am confused. Do I have a prong set over the cavity (for the sake of preventing the cavity from getting dirt in it and showing) or do I leave the cavity uncovered and exposed (for the sake of cleaning it)?

It all depends on how big is the the cavity ?that is really an issue that has to be seen.
It should not be that big on an Si1 quality, But you never know.
If it is not really big then I think you should cover it with a prong, If it is real noticeable then go for another stone.

If its small as the vendor told you..and from the size of it on the GIA cert it seems small..I would definitely cover it. Who cares if a tiny cavity gets dirty if its under a prong..I'd much rather have it smack dab covered over the top and non-visible than open so I can clean it!

I just got off the phone with a gemologist from GIA in NY. She could not see the diagram/picture of the diamond but could read the description from the cert. She stated that since the cavity was listed last on the list of inclusions, the cavity was the most minor of the bunch. If anything, worry about the feather. She also said that it would take a great deal of force, like smashing it with a machine, to break it.

The jury is still deliberating.

Any more expert testimony?
