This is my first post to this forum, although I''ve done a good amount of research on these boards these past weeks. Well, my bf and I are finally getting around to ring shopping and i''m SO excited.(We''ve been dating 9.5 yrs, so it''s about time, i say!)

I have discovered a love for antique rings - OEC, OMC stones with beautiful hand engraving detail on the ring, so we''re trying to find an old ring or maybe put one together.

I''ve given him a list of vendors and stores that carry what I''m looking for based on my research on this board...hopefully it will make his life easier. :P

However, I''m not too sure what the prices on these old diamonds are. How much do you think we can expect to spend on a stone + setting?

We''re looking for an OEC/OMC stone in the range of 0.88 - 1 ct, eye clean, color I/J and better. My dream ring would be art deco/nouveau style, low set, with hand engraving detail.

Do you think we could get anything for around $3000 or should we set a higher budget? Do we have to resort to Ebay?

Thank you all for your help. This is a big step forward for us, and I would like to find a beautiful E-ring that I will treasure for the rest of our lives.

Don't do ebay! Try www.faycullen.com They have a horrendous return policy but their pieces are so beautiful. I am planning on ordering an eternity band from there soon. Do a search in the search box on Fay Cullen and you'll get a ton of posts!

ETA: There is ialso www.singlestone.com they have some gorgeous rings!

I think you could find something for $3-4K.

OWD

AER - totally different look

NYE

All three of those websites are excellent, and the first site has several loose stones if you perfect to buy them seperately and build your own ring.

Wow, you all sure are quick to help! I really appreciate it.

Some of these sites are on the ''cheat sheet'' that I have given my bf.
I''ll be sure to add any new suggestions that you bring up.

We are both graduate students, so our concerns are more monetary.
Do you think we can put together a ring with the above specifications for $3k?
Or should we honestly expect it to be closer to $4k?

This will allow me to give my bf a heads up so he knows what to expect when he does the shopping around.

I think putting something together is going to be more expensive. A .80 stone alone is going to cost you at least $2,500 for an I (ish), SI plus the cost of a setting. A very simple setting is going for $300 plus the cost of setting the stone (around $50), on up to well over $1,000 for a white gold antique looking setting. You could easily spend another $2,500 on a setting. I honestly think that your best bet would be a pre-made ring.

^Addy, tell me about it! I've been on a ring searching craze the past week. So much for productivity.

I love the 0.75 ct ring that you found! I'm still holding out for a slightly bigger stone though. Looks like we'll have to raise the budget to 3.5-4k. Poor bf! :P

We did look in some stores last weekend. Found one ring that I really loved at an antique store. I'll try to attach a picture with this post. The photograph is kinda yellow and not very clear though.

It's an Art Deco diamond engagement ring centering an old mine cut diamond (H, SI1) weighing approx. (.80)ct, with five accent diamonds on both sides, platinum, c 1920
I was first quoted $5000 then told they were having a sale so it was down to $4200. Not sure if I could reduce it further by offering to pay cash. Anyway, the style was perfect for my hand, and there was beautiful intricate engravings on the ring. I felt that $4200 was too much so decided to keep looking and find something with a slightly bigger stone.

Here's something on NYE close to what I am looking for in the same setting, but still above budget. Do you think i'm being unrealistic or should I just keep searching?

This is another one that looks promising.

They have more problems than a horrendous return policy...I would NEVER buy from FC.

Found anything?

Which is more flexible, the budget or the size of the stone?

Here are a few. I bought from them, Langs Antique Jewelry in SF. They have a much larger selection in their store than they put on their website but this will give you an idea of budget. But I think they are on the expensive side.

.77 ct Art Deco

.65 ct OEC

.55 ct ORC

We''ll probably raise the budget to around $3.5k...
I''ve gotten in touch with Leigh at AER and it seems like they have rings close to what I am looking for at reasonable prices.

This is pretty much similar to the ring of my dreams:

This is a antique 0.87 RB platinum ring but it''s not a great stone..
It''s currently going for a low, low price on Ebay, so i''m thinking of buying it for the setting and replacing it with a higher quality OEC.
Do you think this would be possible?

I''m not sure if you know this but Single Stone is having a 25% off sale on finished pieces for the month of Nov. I visited both locations last week and thought that the prices were very high for what they were. However, I never pay attention to the sticker price and always tell them to give me a verbal price. You''d be surprised at how much they come down. However, I''d only try this with Ari at Single Stone as I think he''s got the final say when negotiating.

I''m also in the market for a OEC/OMC and found my dream ring at KFK jewelers. They have a decent selection of estate rings and most of them are in the smaller carats whereas SS carries a lot of larger stones. Unfortunately, their website is down so you can''t see anything but you can always call them and see what they have within your budget. They can probably take some photos for you and since I''ll be visiting my dream ring every week until I buy it (it misses me terribly!) I can give you my personal opiinion on their picks for you and snap some pictures also. They''re in LA and their website is kfk.com I think (Keith the owner went to school with my husband. They made Alanis Morrisettes e-ring when she was engaged to Ryan Reynolds).

Good luck with your search. Have you contacted EricaGrace? I saw some of their pieces last week and they are gorgeous! They also have contacts everywhere and can probably source something for you.
