Ok guys I took some good advice on this forum and I really appreciate all your help. I have spent weeks on this now and I think I am getting close to making a purchase. I need to get a stone soon before we go home to Ireland for xmas.

I have narrowed it down to these:

Round, 1.70, H, VS2, ideal cut, HCA score: 1.0, Price: $13,693 (before pricescope discount), GIA

Round, 1.71, H, VS2, ideal cut, HCA score: 1.0, Price: $13,771 (before pricescope discount), GIA

Round, 1.86, H, VS2, ideal cut, HCA score: 1.5, Price: $15,620 (before pricescope discount), AGS http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1087032.asp

Round, 1.71, H, VS1, ideal cut, HCA score: 1.9, Price: $14,550 (before pricescope discount), AGS

Please let me know what you guys think or if you can find any other similar stones I would be interested. Should I stick with GIA or is ASG good also? I am trying to stay above 1.7, H, VS2 with an Ideal cut. Is this a good combination? Am I going in the right direction, I know she doesn''t want anything smaller than 1.7.

Should I pay the extra for the 1.86, it looks like a good stone, its triple ideal.

Thanks in advance for any input, I would be lost without this forum

I think #4 is definitely out.
I actually like #1 the best out of the ones you posted. GIA rounds its #s so this one is pretty safely within parameters - the higher ca is compensated by the pa. Although the AGS one did get a 0 for light performance, all 0''s are not created equal, and this one may not fare as well on fire and scintillation. I don''t think I could justify an extra couple thousand for that one. Blue Nile does not give a PS discount, but does have a nice long return period.

Anyone else like to chime in? I thought the AGS 1.86 looked good but is an ideal in AGS the same as excellent in GIA?

The 1.86 AGS0 would be my top pick. It has passed the lab''s test for light performance, so it''s hard to go wrong there. The size is nice, too.

My second pick would likely be #2; numbers looks good and price is fine also.

#4 would likely be my last pick, but that doesn''t mean there''s anything *wrong* with the stone; it''s just that I prefer to maximize spread, and 62% depth doesn''t do that quite as well as the shallower stones.

Good luck - I''m sure you''ll choose well.

Oh...and regarding your question about the AGS report and is it as good as the GIA report: I personally prefer AGS. I believe their cut standards are far stricter, and they are on target for color/clarity as well. Many folks here actually feel the AGS report is stronger than GIA. However, both are good, and you''ve done well in narrowing your field.

No, not always.

Actually, they all have possibilities, but, you aren't going to get anymore info from BN. That's their downfall.

I'd personally stick with JA, who can give you an IS on them. I'd ask for one on both.

Or, pick one from each and have them shipped to an appraiser where you can compare.

And as an owner of a 34/41, and also the more popular combo of 34.7/40.8, I can say I see no difference in their beauty.

p.s. It's REALLY hard to take you seriously with that av.
