My boyfriend and I have been looking for enagement rings for quite some time now. After lurking on here for a bit I found the perfect combination of diamond and setting that made my heart sing. We bought a 2.5 ct VS1 H diamond from Blue Nile and my SO had it shipped directly to Leon to create our dream setting (R909 in his gallery).

After several months of waiting, the ring is still not finished. Leon orignally quoted 4-6 weeks for the work to be finished and now it''s already been double this quoted time and it''s STILL NOT DONE! Apparently Leon is saying it''ll still take another few weeks on top of this and when asked what''s taking so long, Leon simply replies that its just not yet done.

I''m not allowed to contact Leon myself since its supposed to be a surprise so all of the above info I got from SO today who let it slip how concerned he was. I feel awful and scared that I convinced SO to purchase a Leon setting and now I''m afraid we won''t ever see our ring.

Can anyone give any advice that I can relay to my SO? Please help us!

Thanks!

I'm sure you will get your ring. Mine took a little longer than he originally quoted. I wasn't concerned, but of course, everyone wants their ring quickly especially when you have no idea how it's going to come out. I can only recommend being patient. You never know what happened, maybe the first one didn't come out well and needed to be remade. Those things happen and you wouldn't ever find that out. Do you know the actual date all the paperwork was sent in, signed and confirmed?

You've picked out a gorgeous setting. We'll all have to patiently wait for your photos! I know it must be so hard.

Call me suspicious, but could your BF being trying to throw you off so he can suprise you with the finished product? Men can be sneaky too you know

If not the case, I don''t think you need to be worried. Leon''s work is said to be truly amazing, and from the rings posted here, you won''t be sorry. You certainly don''t need to be concerned about not getting your ring done at all or getting your stone back, I am sure things are just taking a little longer than anticipated. I am sure he wouldn''t send anything out that he wasn''t 110% happy with. I havn''t heard of anyone needing to send their Leon back to be fixed

Thats my inclination as well :)

I would have to go with Honey and Deelight on this one. The ring you chose (gorgeous and so classic!) is not one of his more challenging pieces. Buy that I mean it doesn''t have all the pave, milligrain, etc, etc, that many of his pieces do have. I would be really surprised if he was honestly taking more than double the amount of time he quoted. I''m guessing your bf is up to something. But be careful not to push him into giving up any secrets he may have about surprising you!!

he always takes twice as long as quoted...................

He finished mine a week earlier than was quoted.

i do think it''s possible that your SO if teasing you but I can also see Leon being behind schedule. I think that if the really really is so overdue he needs to call and complain a bit. I can surely understand being a week or two off but double the time?? i''d be upset, especially if there is an engagement pending the rings completion.

Why do you say that? Did he quote you 6 weeks and take 12?

PS... I would love to see some Leon pics!!! Do you have a thread?

Well if it''s not done yet I hope it gets done soon :) I can''t wait to see it.

Thanks everyone for the replies. As much as I want to believe that he''s just teasing me, I''m positive its not done yet. Let''s just say SO was *very* upset last night. SO''s not one for theatrics and he''s a little old school in that he doesn''t trust too easily. I''m actually pretty amazed that he agreed to a Leon setting as he had to send a very expensive diamond over to someone he hasn''t ever clapped eyes on.

I ran a search last night of Leon settings and timeframes and I think the general consensus is that he''s generally on time if not early... I''m really amazed and I have these horrible knots in my stomache since that is not the case for us. I understand if I had requested milgrain or pave but I think I picked one of his simpliest- almost stock- settings. I just don''t understand. I heard Leon may have a temper too so I can''t urge SO to call on complain especially when he has our ring pretty much hostage.

I''m so frustrated... If there was a smilie that can show how I''m feeling i''m sure it''ll be sobbing and throwing up the same.

Oh sweetpea. I know you're not supposed to call, but if it would make you feel better, just call Leon. It's not worth hurling over, and the manner of the proposal itself will still be a surprise. He doesn't have a bad temper. Just let him know your concerns and perhaps he can put your mind at ease. Many jewelers try to prioritize work by urgency (wedding dates or propsals that are planned around trips), so maybe they had some rush work to complete before they could do yours. Maybe that's why it got pushed back.

I know Leon is one of the best and I know a lot of us would love one of his designs, but why should he not keep to a time frame? If this was Whiteflash or GOG nobody would be afraid to pick up the phone and question the delays. It seems to me that people are too scared to annoy Leon so they just sit and put up with delays.

Its not like he is doing you a favour and making the ring in his spare time. He is running a business.

Thanks for the sweet response. I don''t think I''ll call him myself since I know that my SO would be even more upset if he found out. I had such a big hand in picking out everything form the rock to the setting that I know this is something that my SO wants to be involved in exclusively. Does this make sense?

Anyway, I just feel somewhat better being able to put down my feelings here and know that you guys understand. SO and I decided that he''s going to call Leon and tell him that we''re planning on getting engaged on X date and that the ring needs to be done by then.

I''m sure I''ll be amazed and overwhelmed by the beauty of Leon''s design when I get it but I must say I''ll always have that sour taste when remembering this occasion because of this inordinate and unprecidented delay.

I really think your SO is throwing you off. Leon doesn''t take that long to make a simple setting. 8 weeks at most. He was on time with my setting, it was a simple too.

i totally agree maisie. i think it was mentioned in another thread that leon is like teflon and the same criteria doesn''t apply to him as other vendors. which is kind of amazing to me here on pricescope because this is a very customer oriented forum. but for whatever reason lots of people will put up with stuff from leon that they would never never take from another vendor.

I agree with Maisie and Ringster... I can''t understand not calling him (or your SO) bc you''re scared, or whatever reason. YOU PAID HIM. If you have a question, well then, he should answer it for you. Have your so call the man, you have every reason to know why your ring is taking so long!
Hugs to you, I can imagine how frustrating this is!!

your FI really should call him. seriously, he''s got work order with dates on it and being scared b/c he''s got your stone is just silly. I agree with Maisie that folks tend to be way more accepting of any type of delay from leon than they would with other vendors. if the setting is plain, it doesn''t take long to make. it''s possible your order was misplaced or lost, hence the delay, and Leon needs to tell you FI that if it''s the case. he owes you all some sort of explaination to say the least, IMO.

I was just with Leon about an hour ago and he mentioned they''re extremely busy but I can''t imagine that he''d been so many weeks off his estimated delivery time. I asked him if he could complete my ring (which has a bit more detail & pave on it then yours)in about 5 weeks and he said that was totally reasonable.

You guys DEFINITELY need to call him and see what''s going on. Mistakes happen and maybe your work order just slipped through the cracks.

My SO just email him last week where Leon replied he still needs time to complete it. I don''t know what''s going on. I called SO about it a few minutes ago and he''s upset that I''m getting upset. Its very frustrating.

I know this is really unsettling and YES, it absolutely should have been completed within the time frame, but the only person who can tell you what happened is Leon. Would it really be so painful if one of you called to sort it out? I'd call for you if I could.

I've done it now... I'm going to be in sooooo much trouble. I called Leon and I spoke to Inna. She said its still not done yet and they're still working on it. !!!!!!!!! how the hell can they still be working on it???? She said she'll call me back with more info hopefully *crossing fingers*

I asked her to not tell SO that I've called but I feel awful like I'm ruining everything yet I'm still sick to my stomache that its still not done yet!!! Please send good thoughts my way!

Edit to add: Thanks Pixley and everyone else that has responded to my frantic posts, you've all been very kind to me.

I''ve spoken with Leon twice in the last week and had email responses and I''m not even a firm customer yet.

I think you and the FI need to take some responsibility and resolve this with Leon directly. Your alluding to his "holding your ring hostage" is unwarranted IMO.

Leon has been nothing but personable and responsive with me. Hopefully the same will be said after your phone call.

That''s a little mean purrfectpear. I wasn''t alluding to any subtext and I think its natural to be frightened at the prospect of the unknown since I have not had any direct communication with Leon myself prior to today. I don''t think my SO nor I are avoiding responsibility by not contacting him and its an incorrect assumption to say so as I''ve stated that SO has contacted him just a week prior. As with any purchase where the Dealer has the control over one''s precious item whether it be ring, watch, or even health I think prudence dictates to tread carefully.

Anyway, I just received a call back from Inna and all seems well. She assured me that she will not let SO know that I called and the ring should be done by next week. *happy dance*

Now its the wait for him to propose that begins!!! this is the fun part right?

Frankly, I think you did the right thing calling. You're upset because you lack information- the only fix would be getting the info, which means making the call, so I can't imagine your SO would want you upset a moment longer than necessary. Hopefully they'll at least clarify why this happened; that would help you feel better, right? Additionally, maybe you could discuss with your SO having him speak to Leon Etc. about perhaps a small discount for the delay & lack of explaination, whether or not it is warranted I dunno, but you're an upset customer and they can't go back in time to give you the ring on schedule, sooooo if it would make you feel better about the situation, I would ask. Worst you'd get is a "no", right?

I think you have reason to be annoyed- no explaination about a very long delay is frustrating. But, I wouldn't get too worried over the "he has my stone" thing- no vendor would stay in business let alone have a great rep like Leon if that was even a remote issue.

Working with a back log of orders & a website myself (in cosmetics, not jewelry) I do know it's unavoidable that Stuff Happens. You might be 99% accurate but the occasional thing will happen, especially with hundreds of orders. The only thing you can do is have systems in place to minimize such problems, and to communicate as well as possible with people if a mistake is made. It sounds like they could have been a little more straight forward about the delay- like contacting you when the deadline was approaching and it wasn't ready- and that would frustrate me the most really.

Don't worry, it'll all work out! Six months from now, this'll be a distant memory and you'll have a lifetime to enjoy your beautiful ring. (Hard to keep in that perspective when waiting extra long, though.)

ETA: We posted at the same time, glad to hear it'll be so soon!

It took us a little longer than you''ve been waiting to get something back from him so definitely in the range of what might be expected. As long as there''s not a planned event date for this I wouldn''t let it upset you though - just check in periodically to see how things are going and it will be done before you know it

. I expect you''ll like the result.

Ahem. Shall we see you in SMTR soon?

Hi iconic,

Glad you got the timeline resolved and hopefully you''ll have it by next week!!

I know Leon has been really busy and it seems like a lot more posters on here have been getting Leon masterpieces lately. For myself, I have had an eternity band on order from him since the end of January and it''s still not ready yet and I am also having my engagement ring reset before our wedding in mid-May. I too have been getting slightly worried but I''m sure I''ll get them in time and they will be beautiful. Leon has been great to work with and I''m sure you (and I) will love our rings.

I am glad you called Inna. That is who I dealt with mostly. I think my ring took a week longer than expected. I imagine he gets a lot of orders, and some have tighter deadlines than others. One thing that you need to consider is that the clock does not start ticking from the time he receives your stone. It starts ticking when he receives the work order and the deposit. So has it really been double the time since he would have received the money?

In any event, there is no need to be afraid. It may be inconvenient for a timeline to not be met, but he is certainly trustworthy with our diamonds. Judging from his site, there are people who trust him with much more valuable stones than most of us have here!
