I''ve been searching for a Marquise for my soon-to-be-fiance''. I''ve found several but I am continually frustrated by conflicting ideal proportions for the Marquise. Also, most searches do not include l/w ratios, so I have to continually select diamonds only to usually find that they are either below 1.75 or aboive 2.25. I''ve also heard conflicting theories on how to minimize the bow-tie effect on a Marquise.

Besides the above, I have another potential problem. Against my judgement, I agreed to look for a setting at a local Jared''s. As luck would have it, they had the exact wedding set my gf wants. She will not even consider looking elsewhere. The diamonds at Jared''s left a lot to be desired and their prices were considerably higher than any internet vendor sggested on here. So, I am left with getting a diamond from one place, and a setting at Jared''s. Should I have Jared''s set the diamond? Or is there a St. Louis jeweler someone can recommend me to? Does anyone have any feedback on the quality of Jared''s jewelers?

I''ve searched the forums for answers and can not seem to find any.

PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!

The diamond I''m looking for is:

Marquise
1.01 - 1.24 ct
D-F color
VS2-SI1
Table 55-60
Depth 59-63
None to faint flor
Medium faceted girdle

I''ve also noted that very few vendors list the crown angle, crown height, pavilion angle and pavilion depth.

Martin Sheffield is sending two diamonds for me to inspect to a local appraiser later this week...wish me luck!

HEY LOCAL! Another one girls! Look! Myself, Patty and Yellowfan are all St. Louisans and we all live nearby each other.

I would talk to a few vendors on here to get a great stone. Id trust them more and youll get a much better price and pretty quickly. My mom's stone is a Marquis and the got it at Diamond Shoppe in Clayton but haven't been happy with their work lately.

As far as setting, after you get what she wants, go to Rock Hill Jewelery Associates to get the stone set. Without questions. They are on Manchester just west of Brentwood on the NOrth side of the road facing Schillers. The guy, John Zurbriggen, that does their platinum is the best platinumsmith in the area, and he can probably set it right in front of you while you wait. I have seen him do so TWO TIMES now. People just coming in with the stone and the ring, he sets it, they pay a small fee if any and they smile and leave.

Phone number is 314-968-4311. Address is 9239 Manchester.

PS:who is your appraiser?

I would not buy from Jareds.

Go to someone who will give you a real cert like GIA or AGS. Try the places that Ame recommended.

I think several on here can suggest a great PS vendor for your stone. I thought GOG was good with those? goodoldgold.com
Jonathon is fantastic. you can PM him as well, he goes by RHINO on here.

One place I was really not giddy to work with was Vincent's. I got my ring there, my -ering, and the service after the sale was horrendous. Ill still get my stuff polished and cleaned there from time to time if Im on Olive but I like the guy at Rock Hill SO much more. He's reasonably priced for repairs as well. Genovese doesn't like to work in Platinum either so I wouldn't suggest them either. Both vincents and genovese will make you leave the ring and stone and itll take a freaking week to get em back.

Ame, the place you suggested - he''s willing to set stones bought elsewhere? And if (God forbid) a marquise tip gets chipped? I''m just bringing this up because most places do not like to set stones bought elsewhere, as they don''t want to assume liability for any damage done during setting. They will assume this risk if you bought the stone from them, but otherwise it''s a case by case thing. I just wanted to bring this up because I''d want to know who''s liable before something happens - not after.

The two times I saw it the guys both said they bought from online. I know one of the guys drove from Carbondale, IL (2ish hours south of here) and I believe his mom and dad use this jeweler.

A couple of Cards players use this place as well, I wanna say Pujols is one.

It the setting not the center stone. I am curious as to specifically why not Jared''s for the setting?

Thanks!

I don''t see any real reason why not for the setting besides price. But definitely don''t recommend the stone from there.

oh the setting I guess fine, I was meaning the center stone diamond. Sorry about that.

Another idea for ALL of it---have you been to Curt Parker? Its on Lindbergh at Conway, caddy corner to Huey''s Honda. They are GREAT and they have great rings.

I have a picture of the setting......what do you think of the idea of getting the setting made to match the one in the picture? If I go this route, who would you recommend to make the setting?

I went to Curt the first time I got married......22 years ago. At that time they operated out of their basement!

I guess I should take the picture of the setting and go shop at a few of the recommended places. I am confused about an earlier coomment.....FireGoddess worte that most people don''t like to set stones bought elsewhere....then how to you get a stone set from buying over the internet?

It''s really going to be based on how the ring looks on who we could suggest. But, if you want this in a timely fashion I don''t suggest going custom. I really don''t know that it will considerably make it cheaper either.

As far as local custom work, I have never had custom done by Rock Hill but I have seen some of their custom work and it''s gorgeous. Vincent''s does Custom though it took them only 6 tries to get my VERY PLAIN and VERY SIMPLE solitaire welded together. Genovese does good work with custom but they aren''t keen on platinum work. Simon''s does custom, not sure how good they are.

If you know she loves this particular set, just get it. She will remember what it looks like.

LIke I said, Id get the setting you know she loves. It''s not worth the trouble getting it remade. If anything, keep that one in mind and take her to another few places. She might find something else she loves too.

Some won''t set outside stones and some will. If they have a setter that is good, it won''t be a problem but they will be wary of damaging yuor stone. Some folks don''t want the liability of damaging a stone that isn''t one sold there because they don''t know where it''s from, if it''s an antique, etc.

It makes good sense to get the stone and ring insured separately in the case that the setter doesn''t cover stones not purchased there. I use Chubb and bought it through Insurance Source on Telegraph.

so once I buy the diamond, I should have it insured immediately before getting it set? Won''t most jewelers be covered for "errors and ommissions"? I mean won''t the jeweler be covered if he chips the diamond while setting it?

Some will and some won''t. Even if they are insured, sometimes they won''t take responsibility for something brought there and not bought there. That said, some will. I have never taken something in to be set that I got elsewhere but I trusted this guy with my ring to have the band worked with. No problems either.

I would get it insured immediately not even just for the possibility of damage but what if it''s dropped or something before you get it set or you lose it somewhere before oyu get it set?

Yay!, I just bought my marquise from Martin! He was great. I would NOT buy a diamond from Jared''s. The setting may not be that bad there, especially if it is just what your GF wants. I know they will take full responsibility for the diamond while setting it. When I went in there, they strongly advised me to buy both the diamond and setting from them because they have a lifetime warranty on both if you get them both from them. Don''t let them talk you into that! That''s what insurance is for. I do believe that they will service and stand behind the setting for as long as you have it though, even if the center stone is not theirs. So if a pave stone falls out or whatever, it''s taken care of. Their diamonds were waaay overpriced and left a whole lot to be desired.

here we go! The queen of Marquise!

Thanks to all! I have to run to get to my refi closing so I can afford to buy the diamond!!!!

GO CARDS!

WOOHOO GO CARDS!

Let us know if you need anything else. I hope we were able to be of good help!

One last question (at least for the time being....)

How much should I expect to pay to have a diamond set ????

I can''t imagine much...gosh I have no clue. But I think Jazmine made a good point to go with Jared. I bet if you did go with them you would be able to get it free.

Which Jared are you dealing iwth? Mills or Brentwood?

Yes, I am quite sure that there is not "setting fee" at Jared''s. Just the cost of the setting.

consider having the internet vendor or whomever you purchase the center stone from set the diamond. You can mail your setting to a vendor and this way I think it will be a lot easier and peaceful mind in doing it this way.

Make sure the setting will work with a particular size marquis before you buy it!!!! ask them the carat sizes.

GO CARDS! My dh birthday cake is a replica of Busch stadium! I will post pics after the 10th!

Brentwood.

The setting really is pretty. My fiance'' is petite...5''3" and wears a size 2 dress. Her fingers are tiny....size 4 1/2. The band and the engagement ring are identical with diamonds almost all the way around. I suggested getting the diamond mounted e/w but she nixed the idea. A 1.01 - 1.24 ct should look nice ang large!!!!!
