Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me as I am in desperate need of people’s knowledge and opinions. I have been looking for quite sometime to buy diamond earring studs and I finally thought I knew what I wanted. After many days down at my local dealer going over everything such as what I wanted in color, cut etc I had them ship in some matching diamonds. The first set I passed on because they were Princess cut EGL I in color and when they turned them over I could see a small trace of yellow and I had to pass even though they were VVS2. The 2nd pair I decided to get. They were Princess cut GIA certified H, SI1, No Fluorescence, 2.15tw, excellent cut. After they were mounted in 14K white gold I paid the $9000 and off I went. When I got home and put them in at home I found that 1. I did not think they sparkled very well and 2. I thought the size wasn’t big enough. So, I brought them back and told them I wanted round and I wanted perhaps bigger or better color and clarity. Now this is where I need help. My dealer says round diamonds retail for far more than princess cut, so basically I could have H, SI1, 2.15 round diamonds and pay anywhere from $2000-$5,000 more than if I had the same in a princess cut. They also said rounds will always look bigger, which I think I have noticed when they put a round next to a princess cut. My dealer also stated that when getting into over a carat it is very hard to find diamonds without certs either from EGL or GIA. They quoted me on Round cut, H, SI1, 2.15tw, excellent cut, no fluorescence probably with a cert from EGL or GIA at around $11,000. I have done business with this dealer before and I feel they are honest and I was happy with the outcome of my ring which was an EGL certified .70 Round cut, excellent cut, no fluorescence, G, VS2. (And yes I know GIA is more reputable, but I am very happy with my ring.) So can anyone tell me if the pricing my dealer is giving me accurate or overpriced? Also can someone tell me if there is any truth to what they were telling me about round diamonds etc. I also wanted to state I know the princess cut earrings that I returned were H, SI1 and were not G, VS2 compared to my ring, but the white color and the sparkle was no where near what I would have thought it would have been. You see I have maybe not the most, but I consider a very good amount of diamond knowledge and I know if a diamond isn’t certified that a seller could tell you a G that is actually an H or a VS2 that is actually SI1, so that is why I settled on H, SI1. Also my dealer insisted that you really can’t tell the difference with the naked eye and it would save me some money. I know people say you get what you pay for, but I am hesitant to go into spending in the $13,000-$15,000 range as although I am married, I am also a 22 year old college student. I feel that these earrings will last me for a while, but I would like to eventually upgrade to bigger ones in the future. I love my ring very much so I know I am extremely happy with G, VS2, but am I making a mistake getting H SI1’s or what is a good area to stay in? Lastly, I have searched on Ebay and other various Internet sites that sell diamonds and wondered about them. On Ebay a guy states that he can sell me 2.18tw, Round cut, SI1, F colored diamond stud earrings for $10,500. Now, could this price even be possible? Anyone that could offer any kind of help or advice please let me know and I would be forever grateful to you. Thank you in advance.

If they are GIA certs and actual excellent cuts (older GIA certs do not gauge cut), then $11k sounds like a good price.

Play around on BlueNile.com and see what you can build for what price to get an idea of what''s out there. I built you a hypothetical pair of 2.15 GIA certed excellent cut H SI1''s for right about $11k.

unless you''ve paid all your college loans and can afford to outright pay for the rest, i''d say wait on the big $13-15K diamond purchases. pay for school first, then maybe a house, etc... first.

don''t hate me, just my opinion

Hi, Aussie girl I won''t hate on you lol, but I do not have to pay for my college as my father takes care of that and my husband pays the payment for our house. (I helped with the down payment). Thanks for the thought though. That is why I am even buying these earrings as I am not really paying for them. It is a joint buy. lol.

please stay away from ebay when it comes to diamonds. You''ve found the best source for pricing info and honest vendors right here on Pricescope. type in ebay in the search box and you''ll see why it''s just not worth the risk IMO.

well, I''m a bit jealous then... but awesome : ) Go for it -- just NOT on Ebay! And try to stick to AGS or GIA certs - not EGL...

I don''t know whether its just my perspective, but when I was at GOG the other day I compared a Hearts and Arrows Round Brilliant (1.017ct) to a Jubilee of similar weight (1.07ct) and the round brilliant looked larger. Jonathon said that it was the shape that threw me off, but that is just my .2

Princess cut stones are cut deeper than rounds. It is part of the cut. So RB of the same weight will almost always look larger. They are carrying less weight on the bottom!
