Please help me find a HW Square Emerald or similar

I would really like your advice on how to find the engagement ring that I am looking for. I would ideally love a HW square emerald similar to that of Carrie''s from Aiden''s proposal on SATC. However, we are a young couple with a reasonable budget of 8 - 15K to start off with and then upgrade later. (specialized doc in 2010!...if you are reading this, ILY!) We are looking to find something before the end of the year which one leaves about 2 months!

I''d like to get to know more about the HW ring that was posted a while back on the site by harlowqueen; more specifically the GIA report specs if possible. I understand that the ring is Harry Winston Square Emerald Cut Solataire- 2.04 ct F-VS2 in the mid 20K''s range.

Do you think I could find something like that in about a 1.5ct or higher in a smaller price range? Do you think I could get HW or would I have to find something similar with similar specs? My ring size is only 4 1/4 and I think 1.5 should be ok for now?

For your budget I wouldn't try to get something from Harry Winston personally. I doubt you could get even a carat from there. I would look towards finding an asscher cut or square emerald (Good Old Gold in Long Island is one fantastic vendor I would call) and then get the setting made by Leon Mege, who does beautiful delicate work and prongs a la Harry Winston. That will maximize your budget AND GOG offers a lifetime trade up/in policy on their stones so when finances allow you can upgrade your center stone too!

First though I think you need to solidify your budget, unfortunately a 1.5 plus a high end setting for $8k is pretty unrealistic in a nice color and clarity, so you should make sure you can spend toward the upper end of that range...it's a pretty big range!

For 15K, I''m guessing that you could get a 1ct square emerald from harry winston ... or a 2 ct square emerald or asscher from a respected internet vendor. They are very hard to find at local jewelry stores (even in big cities) .. and the ones you *do* call in, are often not very well cut. If you can find some still out there: Daniel K is a designer than works with very well cut "asschers/square emeralds". You might even be able to find a completed piece ... but it would be on the 1 ct side of things most likely.

As Deco said, Daniel K also has lovely asschers, and some of his rings are on clearance at Pearlman's:

1.51 H VS1 12.3K
1.43 G VS1 14K
1.60 G SI1 15K
1.65 G SI2 13K!

The settings aren't exactly what you want, but the stone is, it would be easy to upgrade the setting later if you like the center in one of these.


ETA: If it were me, I'd get this pendant, have the stone re-set into a solitaire with double claw prongs, drop a colored stone in the necklace for a 'something blue' and still come in under budget.

Ditto! I was going to recommend this, too! Daniel K is a very respected designer and these prices are very rare! Some of these may not be able to be sized down that much, though. If not, I''d get an asscher cut from Good Old Gold and have Leon Mege set it!!! GOG is not showing any stones in your price range at the moment, but you can call them and ask them to check their suppliers.

We have found a diamond wholesaler through a family friend. So far we are looking at the following: What are your opinions on these? Isnt GIA certified better than EGL? Also, the second picture is from StarryEyed and what I am ideally looking for.

the family friend route is often a HUGE mistake. please dont be offended. i would contact Good Old Gold or Whiteflash or James Allen .................or one of the stunning Daniel K closeout rings through Pearlmans............................

the ring pictured is a fat emerald cut and does not appear to be an asscher. you can find a stunning stone with these specs for your budget through Whiteflash or any of the vendors often used here

I would stay away from the family friend and reach out to a vendor like GOG who is well-versed in asschers/square emeralds.

Also, you have to be careful with clarity in step cuts because inclusions have nowhere to hide. When I was asscher-hunting I looked at several SI1s and none of them were eye-clean (not that they don''t exist, just very few and far between). Because EGL tends to be less strict with grading guidelines, a VS2 could have incusions seen with the naked eye. You''d really have to see both of these in person.

Also, do you have more information on these? Table %, crown heigh, etc.? Or better yet, any pictures?

If they are a true wholesaler, it''s my understanding they cannot legally sell to you. A lot of people like to say they''re a wholesaler when in fact they are not. Just remember, anyone who sells to the general public is not a wholesaler.

I dont have any other specs except for whats listed above. I am pretty sure this guy is a wholesaler because he actually sent a diamond to a store we went to. We ended up seeing the exact same GIA report of the diamond we saw at his place! It was crazy. Anyhow, Im pretty sure the EGL one is out because its not a good certification; I like how the one on the right steps down; I''m looking for something similar to these specs but dont know how to look for this:
