Please help me find a half carat emerald cut diamond

Thanks for chiming in with some good advice, Melissa :)

That's the first time I've heard the word 'extinction' used!

Boone do some awesome Tension Setting rings and IIRC we have a few members with them - I know that Kenny (who is not popping up when I try to '@' him at the moment) and his other half have had a 2ct+ Asschers and now an Octavia of good size in them, without any issues to date :) They definitely can't be re-sized, though, so I think getting trial rings to confirm the right size is a good idea! lol :D

I have seen the photos on here of the Asscher and Octavia in the tension setting, and wow they’re gorgeous!

Thank you for sharing the details of this project @SillyKitten. An emerald cut is such a beautiful diamond with such great personality.

You are getting great diamond advice, so let me make observations about the setting. The design looks fantastic, however, the only thing I would make note of is the material. Titanium can be a hard metal to manipulate and not a lot of goldsmiths work with it. You might want to make sure that the ring can be resized if needed at a later date. Also, with a tension setting as there is not a lot of metal holding in the stone. Maybe it would be worth adding a “secret support” at the bottom so that the stone remains secure if it was to get a knock.

When looking for emerald cuts it is important to remember that The Cut grade is not noted by the GIA and they only include the details of the polish and symmetry. If a cut grade is provided it is the company's own opinion.

In line with the other comments above, make sure you check any EC for windowing and extinction. This can be done to an extent with an ASET image. When checking in person, test for windowing (leakage) by holding up your stone and placing your finger beneath it. If you are able to easily see your finger through the stone, your diamond is not retaining light. Extinction is the presence of dark areas in your diamond. This usually occurs with deeper cut stones and may be a result of leakage, but it’s also caused by too much obstruction, which happens when the stone gathers the dark presence of the viewer’s face and body more than normal due to cutting angles.

Thank you so much for the advice, I will definitely ask about the sizing and get more information on the support. Great info on how to check the diamond in person, I had no idea. I really hope the first diamond is a good one because I really don’t want to deal with sending one back and waiting for another...I’m incredibly impatient lol

@SillyKitten,
There are many potential winners, posted, here. My advice, contact JA, or any other vendor whose EC strikes your fancy, and request them to place them on hold. Next, request more visual aid help, in order to accurately evaluate the stones. When the diamonds are lying on P3, it just makes it so difficult to tell if the stone performs 100% to the best of its ability. Cut is not so easy to examine this way.
JA will provide ASET images; up to 3 per email address. I don’t know anything about the other vendors, other than to say, BN does not provide ASET images for their diamonds. Adiamor should cooperate, and send you more visual aids on the diamond I posted, above. Definitely worth checking it out, in spite of “VG” Symmetry.
Please keep us posted on any that pique your curiosity. I’m interested to see how this all turns out!

Thank you, I had heard that JA only provided 3 ASET images which worried me...glad to hear it’s per email address! How do the holds work exactly?

Everyone knows my position re: Yoram & GemConcepts! Absolute PERFECTION!! It wouldn’t hurt to check out his IG, his Boutique, and shoot him a DM/email! *Love*

Thank you, I’ll check them out! That’s one I haven’t run across yet, GemConcepts.

It is my understanding that you request to purchase them, with the anticipation of comparing, eliminating & selecting the one you ultimately want. Request them to be placed on hold; JA will tell you their protocol. Placing your top dogs on hold prevents any lurkers who may be watching what we post from snagging them, first. ;)2

Matthews has you covered and yes, prevents any ' poaching' by lurkers.....Although it's perhaps not fair of me to say that as any stone is fair game till reserved or paid for but it's a good precaution as it happens more than you might think.

Ahhh okay, thank you! I noticed earlier that two of the diamonds listed in this thread were already gone. o_O

I’m not surprised!! Gotta be quick, around here!! Just remember, any stones listed as “sold” may be on hold. Keep checking back.
