Ok so my brother is ready to pop the question to his girlfriend and he has enlisted my help! I have become slightly obsessed with my own project and so he knows I have a bit more knowledge on the topic than he does! Basically, I told him what I thought and he wants me to handle it and just have him ok the $ part. Yay, fun for me, but I don't know a ton about the shape diamond she wants. I have read a lot on this site regarding ovals, but I am still a bit under informed to be choosing the diamond. So...should I just go with GOG and give Jonathan my wants and budget and see what he can find? Here is what I was thinking...

Brothers Budget...(for setting and stone) $10,000.00 so $6500-7000 for diamond...maz of $7500 to allow for setting
Oval G-H-I VS2
thinking he can prob get 1.3ct or so in size....
CUT, CUT, CUT! we want it to be great
wants a delicate halo, bead set on shank and halo with milgrain.
shank to be 2mm

we really want a minimal bow tie and he really does prefer a "shorter, fatter" shape versus long and skinny. Girlfriend is being surprised but I have done some serious recon and know that she likes all shaped ovals. I know she likes a dainty halo but likes the diamond color to be creamy like a vintage diamond, but not with obvious color. Is G-I a good range? Im just not too sure what makes a good cut for an oval as that is most important? Any help would be amazing!!

Thank you so much

Hi Niel...thanks so much... the setting is going to be white gold. And that is quite pretty. Do you think its harder to find one with a l/w ratio of 1.3? I have looked and they seem to have a lower clarity grade in those that I have found.(the SI1's have had pretty obvious inclusions) Maybe just not as common? Like I said, its my brother that likes that ratio more than the girlfriend. I do as well, but I know it really only matters what she likes. I was hoping to find one like that though, so he would love the ring as well as his girlfriend. In addition, they seem to look a bit larger IMO.
Another thing with the color, I was thinking since she likes a slight warmth to her diamond, it would help to maximize the size as well. I know he really wanted to try to get one with around 8-8.5mm in length so it will give a bit more finger coverage. I don't know...maybe we are being too specific which will make it harder to find, but I really don't want to mess this up for him. He already bought a ring that was a halo with a round diamond, but it turns out that was her second choice in a shape! So he is selling that one now. I just really want to get him the best I can for his budget! He is such a great guy and she is awesome! So....am I crazy to want these spec's? He isn't in a hurry or anything. He is fine with waiting to get a great stone. Again, I really appreciate the help! Thank you so much!!

I have a 1.34c oval, G, VS2. Did a lot of shopping. If she wants a warmer & creamier diamond, a J might be good, but you might want a lower clarity rating, as that would add a creamier look. There are just such diamonds in vintage rings, often, & yes, they came in oval back then, too.

chsteinecke..thanks for the info =)

Gypsy..thanks! I thought the bow tie was pretty bad.. and it very well may be bad for other reasons as well. Im not too knowledgeable on ovals. The one Niel showed is a much better one. Im just trying to get the color to a creamier color I guess. I did pass it along for my brother to look at though, just in case he would rather try a whiter diamond.

Thank you all for getting back to me! It is very helpful!!

I looked at several websites for you and didn't find anything. I would personally call GOG and have them source an oval for your SIL.

Thanks again Gypsy...that was very good of you to look for me. I was planning on calling GOG today so looks like I'll go ahead with that plan! They were awesome when I was trying to find my AVC. Thank you all again!

ok guys,

Im back in need of a little help in deciding on one of these diamonds!! I went to GOG as I stated I would, and as usual, THEY ARE AWESOME!! David has been so great and has helped by locating 3 oval diamonds that are in line with what my brothers girlfriend wants.

Here's the thing....1. Im lost as to what makes an Oval wonderful and 2. I like more than one for different reasons. David should let me know tomorrow which he prefers and why, and I totally trust his expertise, but in the meantime, I thought I would get more opinions!!! Especially since I can't make up my mind! So, please, any input would be wonderful!! Thank you all so much!!

#1 1.2 F SI2 http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/12629/

#2 1.2 H VS2 http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/12630/

#3 1.2 H SI1 http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/12631/ This one has a pinkish hue to it as well! =)

And the video link comparing the three, though I am not certain of the order on the video, I believe it is #1-#3 left to right

Again thank you so much...I just want to get more opinions on which would be the most beautiful!!

I'm not really a fan of any of those. But if I had to chose, maybe the last one.

I would tell him to keep looking. And tell him you want no bowtie. And that you want a very bright well performing stone.

Gypsy... thanks so much for the input. Is the reason you don't like the first two because of the bow tie? The second has a large cloud or something on the surface so its not my fave in the video. The third looks great as far as bow tie, but Im concerned with the inclusions. Also, are you feeling that they are not very bright? Sorry for all the questions, Im just trying to understand and learn why they are not very appealing to you.

thanks again,
cj

FIrst two bowtie. And leakage (white on ASET). Third one leakage.

Video doesn't say which is which. From the video I'd say #1 is the best of them. But... like I said, none of them knock my socks off.

Gypsy.... thank again for explaining. Always good to get more advise I say. So in the video the left is the SI2, the middle is the VS2 and that smudge was wax, and the right is the SI1. I too felt #1 performs best, but its not eye clean. the SI1 is completely eye clean from any distance( I asked :) ) Anyways, thanks again for taking the time to help out!
