engagement ring: 4-prong platinum solitaire
wedding band: platinum band channel-set with 6 sapphires and 5 diamonds

My engagement ring is about six years old. The crown has been replaced, as I caught the ring on a door (and thank goodness I didn''t take off a finger) and deformed the ring enough that the prongs loosened and the stone could be twirled around in the setting. I later had the ring sized up a bit.

I''ve slowly lost weight over the years, and now both my engagement ring and wedding band don''t fit. I estimate I may need them to be sized down by as much as a whole size.

Can these rings be sized down that much? Is it a good idea?

I have never liked the cathedral-ness or the prongs on my ring, but I am not sure yet that I want to just get a new ring. If I do completely reset my diamond, would my old engagement setting be worth anything?

I''m not an expert but I believe there shouldn''t be any problems sizing down both your rings.

Its always a guess not having the ring in my hand.

Depending on how many sizes down.

The engagement ring will take the hit.

The worst case going down on the channel set is the goldsmith would have to retighten the stones.

Nice looking ring.

Hope that helps

Have a great finish to your weekend.

Your ering will be no problem. I''ve had rings sized one size more than once, with no issue.

I don''t know about the channel set ring, I always see the Tiff''s ones on signed pieces being advertised as not resizeable, but I''ve never tried. Bring it to a jeweler you trust and ask them and I''m sure you''ll be able to find out for sure.

As for your old setting, this was just discussed on another thread and denverappraiser I believe said that plat. scrap at best is worth maybe $25/gram. So you might be able to get a bit for it in terms of scrap, but I doubt anyone will be willing to buy it from you as a setting, so you might just want to keep it and put a colored stone in it or something.

I don''t think sizing is going to be a big deal with this ring. As far as selling it, I doubt you would get much for it. You could try contacting bill pearlman, he sometimes consigns old settings. I would also do a search on ebay, you might be able to get a couple of hundred dollars for it.

Lovely set by the way!!

Thank you for some very helpful feedback.

Let''s say I''ve always been in love with a basket setting. I know this usually means that another band would not sit close to the engagement ring. Have you ever seen a basket setting that would let the wedding band get close?

Mine is more of a basket setting, and it's from Ritani's endless love collection. The entire collection is designed so a wedding band will sit completely flush.

My WB should be coming in the mail soon, so I'll take pics then. For now, if you search for Ritani endless love I am sure there are some pics with the matching band sitting flush.

You can also see my thread for more pics of the side of the ring, there are more pics on page 2:

I also wanted to ditto the ritani setting. It''s very low set with a basket and also allows for a flush band. Really a great set!
