I am having trouble deciding between two stones that I have looked at:

Total Depth: 62.2%
Culet: Pointed

HCA Rating: 3.9
Quoted price of $9,300 with white gold setting with 2 - 6 point diamonds on each side.

EGL USA Certificate 83353307D
Weight 1.06 ct.
Shape ROUND BRILLIANT
Color F
Clarity VS2
Measurements 6.55 - 6.51 x 4.06 mm
Depth 62.2
Table 57.0
Crown 15.3
Pavilion 43.0
Girdle THIN TO MEDIUM
Polish GOOD
Symmetry GOOD
Fluorescence NONE
Culet NONE
HCA Rating: 2
Quoted price of $8,200 with white gold setting with 2 - 6 point diamonds on each side.

I''m slightly confused why the AGS stone, which is considered ideal in some instances would have a worse HCA rating than the EGL USA stone.

I am leaning towards the AGS Stone but I just want some reassurance from someone in the know. I just want to make sure the AGS stone will be a good choice from a performance perspective (sparkle, etc).

Thank you very much for your help. Much appreciated.

Hi Horatio!

I was just taking a look at the diamond specs you listed, as per your request ... I love the F/VS combo .. The stone I am looking at is E/VS2 - not biased at all

, but I think this combo is great!

These are my thoughts ...

#1 - As you stated it rated 3.9 on the Holloway Cut Advisor -- As far as I understand it, anything below 2 is Excellent, therefore, I would not consider this one, cut-wise any longer if you are making your decision based on the quality of the cut.

#2 - Now the 2nd stone being rated by EGL might, only maybe, mean that the color/clarity grading might be off a grade or 2 b/c due to the more stringent requirements for AGS labs, their color/clarity gradings have been found to be more accurate. If this is an issue, it might be a dealbreaker for the 2nd stone. Additionally, to address your point about the HCA scores, since the 2nd stone doesn''t have the crown/pavillion angles listed, you can only calculate based on the %''s which, I don''t think give you as accurate a reading as the angles do.

I think that, if you have some time, that you may want to continue with your search for diamonds and let these ones go.
I took a look on Whiteflash and found the following diamond which is around your carat weight, color & clarity requirements but far superior in cut ... Maybe you will like it. Take a look ... 1.12 F VS1 A Cut Above Hearts & Arrows

If you like it .. .reserve it before someone else gets their little paws on it

.. It looks like a really nice one!

Good luck! I hope my thoughts help ... Happy diamond shopping and let us know what you select!

I also found this one 1.02 F SI1 A Cut Above Hearts & Arrows ... Maybe you can call them to confirm that it is eye-clean and if it is - The $ 6,747 price tag makes it right up your alley!

Yay!

Hi horatio,

I would pass on both. The first is a steep/deep. If you do a search on here, you''ll see what that can mean (leakage, not so good). I know you can do better.

And as far as the EGL, searching will bring up lots of info as well. They are known for rather soft grading, as Spark alluded to.That''s not to say you''ll never find one that is true to it''s certificate, but they are kind of like finding a needle in a haystack. Also, it has Good Polish and Symmetry, I''d stick to Very Good and up.

Are you looking for your stone locally?

Yes, I am buying my stone locally. I would appreciate it if an expert could comment. Thank you.

Horatio, welcome! Do you mean you want one of our actual experts to comment such as Garry, John Q or Oldminer, Rich etc to chime in and help you? If so, this may take a little time until one of them sees your thread, so hang tight.

Yes. And if they don''t respond, you may need to make a new thread, stating specifically in the title, that you want expert opinions.
