Please help. I'm trying to decide between these 2 diamonds. Both are Brilliant Round:

A)
GIA cert.
1.01 carat
Color: G
Clarity: SI1 100% eye clean
Cut: Very good

Measurement: 6.61-6.56-3.9 mm
Depth: 59.2%
Table: 57%
Girdle: very thin to medium, faceted
Culet: none
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: none
Crown Angle: 33
Pav. Angle: 40.6
Crown Depth: 14.5%
Pav. Depth: 42.5%

B)
GIA cert.
1.05 carat
Color: G
Clarity: SI1 100% eye clean
Cut: Very good

Measurement: 6.64-6.58-3.98 mm
Depth: 60.7%
Table: 57%
Girdle: thin to slightly thick, faceted
Culet: none
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: none
Crown Angle: 32.5
Pav. Angle: 40.8
Crown Depth: 13.5%
Pav. Depth: 43%

Both are very good cuts on the GIA cert. Diamond B is $375 more than A. Which would be the better stone? Also, is there much difference between a VG and an excellent cut? Does an Ex cut sparkle alot more than VG cut? Any comments would be much appreciated.

1. the shallow combination combined with a v thin girdle and the shallow pavilion combined with the good symmetry, I think I''d pass.

2. you could look for something with VG or higher symmetry, as they''re not at all hard to find.

Pinkrose, welcome to the forum.

both diamonds can be very good. What are the prices?

RE: Ex cut vs Very Good cut. Watch this video (Part 3 of the interview with Maarten de Witte). As you can see, some people prefer look of slightly shallow stone which was Very Good GIA cut grade. We have more video clips where diamond expert compare shallow diamond to ideal Tolkowsky cut. Hope to publish them soon.

The only difference with your case is that both diamonds in the video have Excellent symmetry while your candidates have only Good symmetry. You should look at the stones yourself to see which you prefer.

Also check Very Thin girdle with your jeweler. It might be safe or not depending of the setting you choose. Very thin girdle along with shallow crown can have higher risk of chipping.
