Friends,

Many thanks in advance for helping me out. I am trying to decide between these two stones for an engagement ring.

Welcome to Pricescope!

Out of the two, I prefer the first one with the info given, it would be very useful to see Idealscope images of each, are these diamonds with an online vendor? If so, then you might be able to request Iscope images for these stones. As to the second, did you particularly want VVS clarity? Of course it is a personal preference!

First one scores better on the HCA. First scores 1.4, second scores 2.5. Plus, I would never want to pay for vvs clarity. Why pay for what you can''t see?

Kelli, some actually do prefer VVS clarity sometimes for purity or cultural reasons, although that may not be the case here it is sometimes a personal preference!

Thanks for both your replies.

Please note both the stones are of the same price. So it is not a cost decision.

Also regarding HCA, how big of a deal is it that the second stone has a higher HCA?

I will get the scope images for both the stones and will post them here.

Thanks

So far, I also like number 1 better. I look forward to seeing the images!

Can you please give me a little information as to why the first one is better? Is that because of the HCA score?
I envy the fact you can tell about the diamonds just from the facts.

LOL! KC and I have been doing this a long time, so we are fairly familiar with diamond proportions! I prefer the first diamond as the crown and pavilion angles are in a tighter range, the pavilion angle is very important and is steeper in the second diamond. It may not be a problem at all, especially as the crown angle is a bit shallower to complement it, but it would be prudent to check the stone with an Idealscope image. Therefore I would feel the first diamond is the one to concentrate on with the info we have.

Also the HCA can penalize a diamond with a steeper pavilion angle, however it may not be a problem and affect performance, again IS images are useful there. The idea with the HCA is for a diamond to score 2 or below, it is used rather like a pass or fail system, it isn't a case of the lower the score the better the diamond, more like score 2 or below - worth further evaluation. Also some stones which score above 2 can be worth consideration if you know what you are doing and looking for.
