Hi everyone,

I'm trying to choose a setting and will more than likely be purchasing it from Whiteflash (they have the diamond I want and Liza has been great).

I don't have much to go on - only that the ring must be "chunky" (not thin/petite) and it must be white gold or platinum. It's for a size 7.5 finger and will be set with a ~0.8 carat round diamond.

I know choosing a setting is highly personal, but I would love to hear your opinions of these settings:

Are there any other WF settings you prefer? I really like the Legato sleek line pave, but alas it's too thin/delicate.

If you have one of these settings I would love to see pics!

Many thanks,
Chris

For me personally I like your first link- the Cathedral Pave. Did you lady mention if she likes the diamond to sit low or high on her finger?

The first one would be my choice.

I prefer the first

I also like the first one.

I'm going to buck the trend and say that without knowing your girlfriend's preferences, the first one is too specific a style to pick. The other three are a balance between styles, without setting the diamond too high or too low. Setting the diamond higher can mean that the ring will catch on more things and may get banged up a lot more than the lower setting choices. Another thing to consider is whether there is a style that has a matching band that you like. It's not as easy as you think to match a band to a ring after the fact. They have to fit together in such a way that they don't rub against each other and damage each other. You may have to have something custom-made to match the style and to fit together nicely which increases the cost unnecessarily. Another choice is to set the stone in a very basic setting, and let your girlfriend pick out the ring she likes. You have to have to ask yourself what she would appreciate more - the chance to pick out her own ring or the idea that you selected a setting that you thought was perfect for her. Decisions, decisions!! Best of luck.

I like the second choice best.

You can also look at the "recently purchased" photos to see how it looks with a stone that's similar in size to the one you chose.

If I were choosing for myself, I'd pick the first setting. I like a high set diamond and only four prongs. IMO, a a wide, six pronged setting swallows up a diamond.

I prefer the second one but I don't care for super high settings.

My vote is #1. I know it is higher than the other's but it showcases the diamond and makes it the focus, not 'protected' like the others (weird explanation??) I prefer the 4 prong to the 6 and I like where the pave ends and how it is bead set (seems more secure).

IMHO it is more appealing...

I like the first one best or the one that DS suggested, but I don't particularly think of a 3mm shank as 'chunky' either. Are you sure that your idea of chunky and hers are the same?

I don't like any of them, but I'd pick the first if you put a gun to my head and made me chose.

But like I said, I wouldn't go with any of them.

Here's what I'd do. Get Liza on the phone and ask her to quote you for (you can say this to her verbatim):

A split shank like the Allegro (same lines) but with the pave style of this the Legato Sleek Line Pave. Basically, ask them to make the Legato into a split shank, same lines same pave but with two thinner shanks flowing up to the head. (with the same taper at the base of the head the Legato Sleek line has). Legato Head.

Should come to about to about 1450-1500 in 18k I'm guessing. Here's the Allego: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/allegro-in-d-diamond-engagement-ring-159.htm I like it, but hate the pave on it. If they can switch it to the bright cut pae you see on the Legato Sleek line rings it will be MUCH more beautiful and durable. Plus it would be "Chunkier" than any of the ones you chose while still being fluid and elegant.

It would be beautiful.

Alternately, I'd see if she'd like a halo. It would amp up your 80 point center a lot and give it a lot more presence on her 7.5 finger. http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/halo-prong-diamond-engagement-ring-521.htm

Thank you everyone - really appreciate you taking the time. You've given me lots to think about.
I'm going to rope in my sisters and ask their opinion too.

Gypsy - thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to look into this. Hopefully I won't have to put a gun to my g/f's head in order for her to like my choice!

Christina - By "chunky" what I really meant is not a really thin shank (say ~2mm). Thin seems to be all the rage right now, but I'm after something more substantial.

Rainsoaked - I love the Legato. Congrats!

Milka - thanks very much for that. I will keep the wedding band in mind. Would be great to have the option of a matching band, but ultimately this will be up to my g/f after I've proposed. What a relief!

Everyone else - thanks!

Can't wait to see what you decide

Out of those options, I like the 2nd choice best.
