Hey guys, I''m considering a diamond w/ the following measurements as per the GIA cert:

2.1ct, G, VS2, GIA triple excellent cut/polish/symmetry, no fluorescence

Proportions from the GIA cert:

table% = 57%
depth% = 61.7%
crown angle = 34 degrees
crown depth = 14.5%
pavilion angle = 41 degrees
pavilion depth = 43.5%
culet: none
girdle: medium to slightly thick (faceted) 4.0%

This stone is being marketed to me as superior to bluenile''s signature stones in terms of cut, light performance, optical symmetry/H&A etc.

Can you guys please let me know if this diamond''s measurements qualify as ideal under the various standards? Are there any values that are not ideal or a cause for concern?

For example, the vast majority of BN signature stones I''ve looked at online have a girdle% of 3%, and some 3.5%. I''ve never seen one with a girdle thickness of 4%. Is this a red flag?

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

The slightly thick girdle is what is making the stone slightly deep (61.7%). I allow up to 61.8% total depth as a "screening" criteria for "ideal" cuts.
But I think that the stone is likely to be a very good performer; 9/10, possibly 9.5/10.

On the plus side; a slightly thick girdle helps prevent damage when the stone takes a knock. The girdle area is the most-damaged part of a diamond during normal wear-and-tear.
I like stones with med-stk girdles if possible, although "purists" prefer thn girdles, so that absolutely no "deadweight" is being carried by the stone.

I would expect to be very happy with the stone, if it was mine.
Cut, colour and clarity are all in fairly "safe" zones.

looks promising from the numbers.

Blanket statements comparing this diamond to a line of diamonds like BN signature is misleading. Each diamond must be assessed for cut in its own merits.

Is this diamond beeing presented as an H&A diamond? If so, you need to see hearts and arrow images to verify that status. True H&As cost more, and unless it is verified with the appropriate images then as a consumer you should not pay that premium.

The cut of this diamond is within the desired parameters. It is carrying a little bit of weight in the girdle, but probably not so much as to exclude it.

Have you seen the diamond? Are you able to get an Ideal Scope image? What is the price?

FB, Stone-cold, dreamer-dachsie - thanks very much for replying so quickly and for your opinions.

Dreamer, this stone is being touted as a top-notch H&A stone. I did see the H&As once, but at the time was not very educated on how to evaluate the quality of a stone''s H&As. I definitely saw the hearts and arrows but don''t know if they were symmetrical, whether the hearts had any clefts etc. I''ve since read up on this topic (at gog) and I think I now know what to look for. I''ll take a second, closer look soon. I also saw it under a light path/fire scope - I''m not sure if this is the same as an Ideal Scope. I know that the device was supposed to evaluate light leakage/return. I''ve also read up on how to gauge the resultant image from this scope and will take a closer look to see how the stone looks in terms of redness/blackness/white spots etc. I''ll also ask the seller for an image from this device if possible. Lastly, I saw the stone under a brilliance scope and the stone ranked High for brilliance and Very High for both fire and scintillation. Not sure if the absence of a Very High rating for brilliance is worrisome BTW. The dealer did say that it''s very rare to find triple Very High stones, but I''m not sure whether to believe that claim or not (I know a friend who got a triple VH round).

I''ve been quoted 23k. In your collective judgement, is this a good price?

Thanks again - this forum is amazing.

It is a good price based on the in house comps I could find. I would suggest making sure that the vendor has an *excellent* return policy (i.e., no questions asked 100% refund within 10-14 days minimum) and then have it looked at by a qualified independent appraiser. It is a lot of money to spend and so I think it is worth it. Here is a link to help find an independent appraiser near you: https://www.pricescope.com/appr_list.aspx Make sure they will assess cut quality in addition to giving a value appraisal.

I will definitely inquire about the return policy and get it independently appraised if I go ahead w/ the purchase.

Is a light path/fire scope the same thing as an Ideal scope? And is this device and a H&A viewer independently capable of saving images of a stone or do you need a camera to take images? I''m going to ask the seller for images of the stone as seen through these devices and want to know if this is just a matter of recording an image w/ the device itself or taking an image with a camera.

Also, how rare is it to find a round brilliant that scores triple Very High''s under a brilliance scope?

Thanks

I think ther B-scope is not given much credence anymore, is it? Anyone know?

Hi Bench

The diamond has definite potential, whether it is h&a though remains to be seen so images of both hearts and arrows would be needed in order to support this claim if you can get them and having h&a cut quality matters to you.
