Please help I''m so confused: About I1 clarity

I had made a decision that I wouldn''t go below VS2. But today at a local jeweler, I was shown a diamond with the following specs:

.74
E
I1
Brilliant cut (their equivalent of ideal)
Polish: Very good
Dimensions 5.7

That was all I was able to write down. I''m sorry I don''t know more or the rest of the dimensions. When they first showed me the diamond, I couldn''t see any of the inclusions at all. Neither could the sales associate. Under a miscroscope, however, I could and once I knew where it was, I could spot it. It was a scratch on the inside of the diamond and you can see it from the top down when you see it up close and know where to look. It was sparkly and very beautiful She mentioned that with a setting with side diamonds, you wouldn''t be able to see the scratch.

What are your thoughts?

If it is on the inside, it is probably a feather, which means crack. I''d be very careful about an I1 diamond for an engagement ring. What kind of lab certificate does it have?

I believe GIA? It''s from Jared''s. We are still searching for diamonds. Our most important thing is that it doesn''t look cloudy but now I''m confused about getting the I1. There was another with the following specs:

SI2
Brilliant
5.43

Also very beautiful. We had originally seen a .71, brilliant, F, VS2 but it was sold when we got there

If you decide to buy it, take it to an independent appraiser within the return period. Could be a feather as DS noted.

It sounds like its best to keep looking. we have a jewelry extravaganza in Miami LOL It''s a building with nothing but diamond vendors. I''ve been once, it was too intimidating but it''s worth going back.

Well, I will just tell you that many of us who started out on this forum when shopping for a diamond ended up buying high quality stones from vendors recommended on here. I first bought a stone from Good Old Gold and later bought a pair of diamonds from WhiteFlash for earrings. Now that I have seen top quality cuts, I wouldn''t even look at those chain jewelers again. I''d encourage you to consider using this search tool and seeing what comes up. You''ll likely get a better stone for a better price.

Just to show the other side, there are some of us with I1 diamonds which are clean to the eye, however you need a trusted vendor and to know what to look for. Feather's aren't always a bad thing even with an I1 clarity, depending on location and other factors, but again you need a trusted vendor to be able to advise you, or an appraiser.

Ditto Lorelei - as some of you may remember, I was considering I1 myself recently. I decided against it, but I believe that with the help of an honest and learned vendor, and some time and patience, you could find a great I1. Many people feel like they are not appropriate for engagement rings, but as with everything else its just a personal preference.
We should remember that there are thousands of people walking around with I1 or even I2 erings that probably don''t even know it, after buying from the mall etc.- doesn''t make it "right", but I''m sure they all love their rings. And a good I1 from a great vendor will be a world away from a maul I1.

I, on the other hand, would be happy to offer such a stone to a client of mine who was looking to score a great looking diamond for much less money. (granted, we do not know the details of the cut, it is the principle of the thing I am referring to here.)

An I1 with a small feather is not something to worry about. There are I1''s with large easily seen gletzes or even large surface reaching "canyons" that are both unattractive and potentially dangerous, but the commonly held myth that any feather means problems is just that, a myth.

While I would be very careful in selecting an I1 for an engagement ring, it would be for evaluation of the stones beauty first, then checking to see if there is anything that is unusually dangerous about the stone. In my opinion, a small feather does not constitute such a danger.

Here Diamond Seeker and I are in complete accord. You will get normally a better cut diamond with ALL of the details and at a better price from one of the on line vendors. You will ALWAYS have a return period and a no hassle inspection and return period with no demands that your return can only be applied to another stone from the same store as you will often get at the mall.
