Hi,

I''ve been lurking this site and think that its great- I''m now wishing I new of it when we purchased my engagement ring.
I apologise in advanse for rambling. The story is for my 30th I''m getting a right hand ring, halo style. I was given $10 000 au but did not want to spend it all on the ring.
I first started with Ovals, but after having a look at some decided against due to the bow tie, I then settled on a cushion cut. Yesterday whist at another diamond dealer looking at their cushions, I saw an oval E, Si1, 1.13ct (minimal bowtie)that I fell in love with.
The problem is budget, what started at around $6000, is now up around $9000 and I''m feeling incredibly guilty. We have four children and I''m thinking $9000 on a ring is a bit selfish, even though the money was given to me for my birthday.
Any-way I have a .82, G, Si1 pear cut diamond that is from a previous ring that I no longer wear. I''m thinking that I could have that diamond made up into a halo setting and the cost would be only for the setting which I think would be around $2000. What I''m wondering is if .82 will be large enough for a halo setting ? I like pears, but love cushions and good ovals- I''m worried that if I go with the pear, I will always be thinking of the oval.
I''ve done a search on pear halo''s but all the diamonds seem quite large, if there are any under 1ct pear halo''s I would love to see them.

This may not help, but could you / would you trade in the pear to put the money toward the purchase of the stone you really want?

Best,

LizzyD

Hi Lizzyd,

I thought of that, but being in Australia I''m having trouble finding a dealer that is willing to do a trade in. If any-one knows where I could do this that would be perfect.

I''d definitely look at any trade in possiblity. I don''t think you should settle for a stone shape you don''t love. why spend more money on project or throw good money after bad so to speak when it''s and oval or a cushion that you really want?

There are a couple of Aussies on the board (including a vendor or two, I think). Perhaps they will chime in with suggestions on trade-ins or even selling on consignment. You might want to think about starting a new thread entitled Aussie Trade Ins or some such to be sure to get their attention, just in case they miss this.

Best,
LizzyD

Do you like the pear? Do you not wear it because you feel it's not big enough, or is there another reason?

Being partial to pears myself, I will steer in the other direction.

If you really like the pear I would consider setting it in a halo setting. Halos aren't just for big stones...in fact, a lot of times they look quite stunning on smaller stones, whereas with larger stones they can be overkill. So I don't think that a 0.82 ct pear is too small for a halo by any means.

However, if you are just thinking of the halo to save money, and may regret it later, you need to seriously think about this before you plunk down $2500 for a setting and then realize it's not doing the trick. It's quite a decision, and in addition to that...an oval faces up large for its carat weight, while a cushion faces up small for its carat weight so its something to consider. However when you really love a shape or cut, that doesn't matter as much. But for some people it does.
