Please help! I'm confused - is this a good diamond?

Hi!

I'm new to the forum but have read so many threads and articles, there is a wealth of information here.

Initially I had rejected this stone based on a HCA score of 4.6, further research is telling me that HCA doesn't favourite these steep angles but it may still be beautiful.

Could anyone offer some advice to ease my mind or confirm my suspicion. I will be inspecting in the morning.

0.84ct
GIA - F, VS1, triple excellent, none.
34.5% crown angle, 41.4% pavilion angle, 58% table, 62.1% depth, slightly thick faceted (4%).
6.03x6.07x3.76mm
Inclusions: crystal, indented natural.

I really appreciate advice.

Do you have pics of the actual diamond or ASET image?

I wouldn't even bother with getting images and just eliminate the diamond based on the HCA alone. The cut may not be too bad, but I doubt it's great.

Personally I wouldn't consider a diamond with an HCA above 2 (there are plenty below 2 so why bother unless you're experienced). Below 2 for me means it's worth looking at in more depth. Where are you based and where are you intending on buying from? If you're in the US then there are great PS vendors that will be able to provide optimal cut stones easily.

How about this diamond, it's 1.52 CARAT I-VS1 TRUE HEARTS IDEAL DIAMOND with ags000 but the HCA score is 2.5. Would you avoid it because of the HCA? What about the cut knocks it down on HCA but let's it rate as AGS000?

AGS000 trumps HCA. HCA is only a weed-out tool, especially for the overly-broad GIA XXX category. We usually recommend to stay under 2, but there are beauties slightly above a 2, this being one. With an AGS000 the light performance of that stone has been verified - that outweighs any theoretically based calculation.

Hi,

I'm not after anything outside the 0.78-0.87ct range...

The HCA score is throwing me, I need some insight to what the negative effects of these specifications are and what to look out for on inspection.

If I use the AGL estimator I end up with:

Length:6.03
Width:6.07
Depth:3.76
Total Depth:62.15%
Table percent:58
Crown height:14.5
Girdle (from):Slightly thick
Girdle (to):Slightly thick
Polish:Excellent / Very Good
Symmetry:Excellent / Very Good
Crown angle:34.5
Pavilion depth:44

Tab Percent: 1A
Crown Angle: 1A
Crown Height: 1A
Pavilion Depth: 2A
Girdle: 1A
Depth: 1A
Polish: 1A
Symmetry: 1A
TotalGrade: 1B

Is a pavilion depth of 2A bad? Is a 1B overall bad? What would be the things to look out for? How much perceivable difference is there between a AGS0 and 1B stone?

I'meorried in becoming too obsessed with numbers and I might be missing good stones.

I think you are over-thinking it. If you really want the best of the best, get one - look at Crafted By Infinity, Brian Gavin, Whiteflash ACA's - they are designed to be the most ideal in both symmetry and light performance. The angles will all be correct. The H&A will be perfect.

Class charts... helpful, in some instances, but when you already have ideal light performance proven, why bother tying to pigeon hole it into a class or HCA range?

Thanks for the feedback.

It is difficult in Australia, I don't think it is as easy to order online and evaluate and return, but i will have a look at the links you have provided and some of these reputable sellers.

I prefer to buy a diamond in person, it may sound silly...

Is the general consensus that this is a horrible diamond? I'd really like some feedback on the diamond I have mentioned, is it one of those things that despite a horrible HCA score it could still be great?

Thanks again to all.

The only way to know for sure is to see the Idealscope image. HCA is an elimination tool, not a final decision making tool.

Thanks for all the help, I'll have a look at some today..

Cheers,

Look at an IdealScope and ASET prior to purchasing.
