Hi everyone,

I am working with Lesley and Brian at Whiteflash to buy a diamond and design a pendant for it. The pendant will have a halo and a very thin bezel around it.

Both Lesley and Brian have been wonderful to me over the phone.

I was on the phone with Brian for 2 hours the other day while he taught me all about diamonds.

I have narrowed my choices down to the following:

1.87 carat
A Cut Above (ACA)
Hearts and Arrows
I Color
VS1

1.732
A Cut Above (ACA)
Hearts and Arrows
G Color
S1I

Brian said that both diamonds are beautiful. He also said that the diamonds are cut so perfectly that upon viewing each diamond he cannot notice a difference in color between the "I" and the "G"

The 1.87 diamond is a bit more expensive and looks substantially larger than the 1.732 but should I be concerned about the "I" color?

Brian said that I should choose the 1.87

My diamond ring is "F" color so it scares me a little to choice a diamond with an "I" but Brian said that the "I" is perfectly clean and white.

What would you do?

Thanks for your help!

Would depend on how much a bit more is and if I can afford it.
The color difference wouldn''t be a big consideration.

Wow, that's going to be some pendant!!

Personally, I'd go for the G. It's less money, and while it may appear smaller when compared with the other, in the setting, it's still going to look big, and beautiful.

And then you don't have to worry about the color either, though I seriously doubt it would be a problem anyway.

Can't wait to see this.

I''d get the bigger one for sure! I have earrings from WF and the diamonds are both Is and they face up very white. Your pendant is larger than my earrings, but ACAs are so well cut that the I will definitely face up white. Have you thought about getting both sent to you so you can compare them in person?

Thanks Thing2of2!!

Will Whiteflash send me the diamonds to look at? If so, do they charge a fee for this? Just want to make sure I make the right decison on this!

Brian will never steer you wrong--i would go with the larger stone

I''m not sure of the procedure, but I''m pretty sure I''ve read here on PS that sometimes vendors can ship diamonds to an independent appraiser and you can go see them there. I would ask Whiteflash about it, though, because I''ve never had it done so I''m certainly no expert!

If that''s not possible, you could always just go with the I that Brian recommended but ask them to hold the G for you. That way if you''re not happy with it, you can send the I back and have them send you the G. You''d have to pay to ship it back to them, but that''s not that much $ in the grand scheme of things!

I can''t wait to see what you go for!

Hi thing2of2,

If I go with the "I" that means that Whiteflash will make up the pendant and then it will be too late to go with the "G".

Not sure if I should go with the larger size or the clearer stone ("G") although Brian says the "G" and the "I" both look the same - very white and very clear!!!

I''m sure I will lose another night''s sleep over this decision! I just want it to be perfect!

I just bought an I color, and I am amazed at how white it it. I would definitely go for the 1.87. That is going to be a stunning pendant!

I would go with the I in a heartbeat, especially if Brian recommended that one, but it depends on whether it would be '' mindclean'' for you.....Whatever you choose, it will be one glorious pendant and i am jealous.....

It''s great that the folks at WF will give you their honest opinion on their stones. If Brian recommended the I, I wouldn''t hesitate. However, from reading what you are saying, I''d go with the G. The size difference isn''t huge and sizewise both of them would make a glorious pendant. I say that because you are doubtful of the I color and will always be comparing it to your ering. The mental wear and tear is not worth the size difference to you - IMO.

Good luck and don''t worry yourself sick over it. It''s supposed to be fun!

Thanks for all of your input everyone! Lesley has put aside the "I" for me but I really think that I will go for the "G" instead. It''s all about "Mind Clean". Can''t wait to post pictures!!

Just have to say that Lesley from Whiteflash has been and continues to be wonderful and patient with me.

Still have not decided on which diamond yet so she is going to e-mail my pictures of the diamonds side by side so that I can decide. She said that the "I" is very, very white.

Stay tuned!!

To get a "true" picture of size difference, resize them down to life size. The difference will be much less noticeable.

FWIW, my ACA princess from WF is I color and faces up like an F. And rounds show even less color than princesses. I also have a J color round ACA pendant that faces up very white, although it's only 0.5ct (lucky you with your 1.7+ pendant choices!).

I think in the I color range, if you're going to see any visible body color at all, it's going to be from the sides/bottom rather than face up. The setting you're designing will absolutely minimize that because it will cover the sides of the diamond. I would go with the one Brian recommended. On a pendant, I'm of the mind that every little bit of size helps, since the neck/chest area has a lot of real estate to fill up, unlike the fingers!

ETA: Check out this great tutorial on color if you haven't already! And keep in mind that the differences are greatly exaggerated in those pics due to the background and magnification.

I would definitely choose the I, and I would totally trust Brian. He knows everything there is to know about diamonds. He''s incredible to work with. PLEASE post pics of your fabulous pendant once it is made!

MrsGuz, you cannot tell the difference between an I and a G face up. It would only be if the diamonds were turned upside down facing down on white paper that you could detect a difference in colors. An I diamond will face up nice and white. No worries.

Thank you everyone so, so much for you reassurance. I went with the 1.87 "I" both Brian and Lesley told me again today that it shows very, very white!!!

I am so excited.

I will post pictures when my pendant is finished!!!

I have a 1.54 H ACA in a 3 prong pendant Martini Whiteflash setting, love it.

Knowing how great the cut is on the stones, I''d say don''t worry about the I.
But if you want it to be "mind clean" and if think the I color is going to bother you,
then I''d get the G. I have to say I had huge reservations about getting a H color stone.
But the moment I saw it, Brian had me sold!!

WOOHOO! I am just joining this party, saw today that you''re trying to post pics. I can NOT wait to see this bad boy! A 1.87 ACA, WWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW! I have a 1.82 K, yes, K, and it''s ideal cut but NOT an ACA. You have absolutely positively NOTHING to worry about with an I, especially an ACA!

Any ACA will be stunning, let alone a HUGE one in a halo. "I" will be GORGEOUS and in that good of a cut, you will not see any hint of color, especially in a pendant setting. Can''t wait to see pics of your pendant!

Oooh, I''m so glad you went with the I - I can''t wait to see it.. it''s going to be stunning (and HUGE!). :)

Because you''ll only view the pendant face-up, it''s going to be white as white can be... just lovely!

Lorelei - you''re not the only one to feel a slight green tinge of envy!

I don''t think there was a wrong decision to make here, and I think that your pendant is going to be incredible

. I hope you come back for some pictures of it!
