Im still trying to find a colored stone for my moms tiny heirloom diamond.

i want something just so friggin perfect! and needs to be 4.5mm

See, 4.5 mm is too small for most people to cut, so to be worth cutting, it really needs to be top material - at least, thats what im gathering. Something like a crazy good sapphire, or a ruby.

Im having a heck of a time finding anything. anybody seen anything?

Have you checked with Prima? They had some amazing red spinels last year, I got a suite for a 5-stone. They're small but mighty, maybe they have a nice one still kicking around?

Maybe this one?

http://jefferydavies.com/gemstones/sapphire/mj4303-sapphire-41ct/

Another thought I had, which would be a less durable stone but seems "common" in that size range would be a nice demantoid garnet. Maybe contact litnon? There was another interesting site for these I found a while back but now I can't find it... will have to look around. But it seems most of them were between 4-5MM, and the visual impact even on those small stones is pretty amazing.

The problem is that it is difficult to get crazy good colours in small sizes. I presume it has to be a very durable CS? Blue sapphire is easy enough, and perhaps ruby. Spinel can be iffy. Coloured diamond?

id do i colored diamond but it woudl have to be similarly cut....and thats where that gets hard

and yes see the problem is two fold, if its not a good color, its not "worth it " for most cutters to spend the time cutting. If it is that nice of color, ideally you want to get a larger size out of it.

my mom isnt too good at taking her rings off for things so yes ideally i want to get something more everyday wearable

I found a few potential options at Wildfish. I'm not sure how exact the 4.5mm size is, but I looked for the closest size possible.

1) I really love this color-shift sapphire http://wildfishgems.com/inc/sdetail/ceylon-sapphire-0-30-carat/10877/19917
2) This pinkish/red sapphire is also really nice http://wildfishgems.com/inc/sdetail/african-sapphire-0-48-carat/10889/15725
3) Another bright pink sapphire http://wildfishgems.com/inc/sdetail/african-sapphire-0-48-carat/10889/15804
4) Not sure if you'd consider a montana sapphire, but I liked this one as well http://wildfishgems.com/inc/sdetail/montana-sapphire-0-56-carat/11072/15683

Don't know if you have a strict budget, but just some ones I found that I liked :)

EDIT: found some colored diamonds that are pretty (IMHO) from Leibish--obviously they can be really expensive but just throwing it out there.

And some others from JA:

Are you still open to pairs? These pink-purple sapphires from Yvonne look perfect: https://www.etsy.com/listing/244300...re-matched-pair-round?ref=shop_home_active_63.

This mahenge spinel is a touch too big at 5mm, but still worth a look: https://www.etsy.com/listing/286694...l-round-5mm-old-color?ref=shop_home_active_88
i saw that pair and amost ordered them but they jsut seem "ok" and i really want something ideal to make up for the size, you know? My mom seems to have a real sweet spot for her heirloom diamond and i think she wants to make something she can pass down too

Have you reached out to Swala? They have trays and trays of gems that they don't put up on their site, and if I remember correctly they had at least a dozen little neon spinels when I was in there.

VapidLapid can you elaborate (I'd love the opportunity to learn)? The raspberry spinel you bought from gemfix is one of my favourites, so I am curious what you think.

Niel, wow I am surprised at how hard 4.5 mm is to find!

I was going to post the gemfix one as well, and my other choice got snapped up last night. :wall: I'll keep looking though!

I don't think they're necessarily that hard to find but you have to ask. Most vendors don't seem to list stones that small, but they typically have them.

Might be a little too big and a little too dark.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/0-56ct-Winsome-Round-Cut-Intense-Blue-Sapphire-/252368006094?hash=item3ac24e2bce

Not the best cut but with the size being so small, it might not matter anyway.

Eye popping colour, round, affordable and 4.3 mm!

I know I cannot make lurkers do or don't do something, but I humbly request that anyone reading please respect Niel enough to not snatch stones so that she can evaluate these stones and buy something fantastic for her mum! She has worked tirelessly in CS to put together wonderful pieces of jewellery for total strangers out of the goodness of her heart.

Niel,
I think it is obvious which one I would like you to get!
