Hi Everyone,

In my research I am coming across so many different certificates for diamonds. Can someone please explain the differences of them, which ones I need, and are they for all stones or just diamonds? Are there certain certs required for coloured gems?

All I really know to look for are Cut, Color, Size, Clarity and mine have polish, symmetry on it (I think it is a GIA cert). But I am hearing/reading about AGS, Sarin, EGL, NGL, AGTA...what are these and are there more? I want to be the most informed possible.

Not sure if it matters, but I am most interested in Asscher/EC, Cushion cuts and diamonds, sapphires, spinels, aquamarines. But will take info on any cut and any stone please!

Thanks in advance.

You should shop GIA certification to have an idea of grading accuracy vs. pricing. Of course there is still opnion involved but GIA is "the" cert of choice. AGS is comparable. Anything else outside these two certs take with a grain of salt.

You will hear various opinions on this topic. Enjoy the thread, it''ll open your eyes to this line of questioning...

Thanks for the threads, DBS and Reg Guy...I need all the help and knowledge I can get. I just can''t figure out what to look for in each gem and which certs are "best".
