My fiancee proposed to me last Thurs. When I checked the ring I saw it had an EGL cert. I called EGL USA and found out the cert is from Israel. The diamond is set already. We are concerned for insurance and future resale that we need a US certification. The jeweler did not tell us it was not certified in the US. Here is the info ron the stone:

WEIGHT: 1.37 cts.
SHAPE & CUT: Princess
MEASUREMENTS: 6.18 - 5.88 x 4.52 MM.

TOTAL DEPTH: 76.9%
TABLE WIDTH: 72%
CROWN HEIGHT: 10%
PAVILION DEPTH: 62%
GIRDLE THICKNESS: Medium, polished

POLISH: Good
SYMMETRY: Very Good
CULET: None

CLARITY: VS2
COLOR: I
FLOURESCENCE: Moderate Blue

I believe my fiancee paid 5600 or so for the stone. The Jewelers Vigilance Committe said in light of my concerns it needs to be re-certified in the US. Any thoughts on what we should do or on the ring itself?? Thanks.

You can have it re-certified at any time (whenever you might need it, that is). So... no rush. I hope you will not have to sell it ever - it is such a hassle and waste of money, that no certificate is going to make it easier. For now, it sounds like the price was right (this was B&M purchase, right? the net would have saved a bit) for the stone and cert so... I wouldn't worry. Just my 0.2, of course.

If you have doubts about the piece, this is another matter.

I would just be sure to have it appraised to make sure that the color and clarity are correct....and do so within the return period!

As we understand it, the challenge with the diamond grading reports issued by EGL Israel has nothing to do with the insurance companies and thus obtaining insurance for your ring should not be an issue, they are likely to issue the policy based upon the characteristics stated on the lab report and base their replacement cost in the event that a loss occurs upon a diamond of similiar quality with an EGL U.S.A. lab report because they don't know "the difference"... And "the difference" seems to be based upon a trademark dispute between EGL U.S.A. and the other foreign EGL franchises that came into play about two or three years ago for a reason that we're not privy to... Long story short, we wouldn't stress over it.
