Hi All,

I''m a newbie on diamonds. PS has helped me a lot on narrowing down my choice. Thank you!

Below is the diamond that I''m considering. Please let me know what you all think :)

HCA result is 1.3. Only thing concern me is the slight fluorescense and the thick girdle.

Carat: 1.52
Color: E
Clarity: SI2

Cut: VG
Polish/Symmetry: VG
measurement: 7.17-7.22x4.53m
Table: 57%
Crown Height -Angle 15.5% - 35.5
Pavilion Depth - Angle 42% - 40
Girdle Thickness: Slightly thick to thick (fac.)
Culet: Pointed
Fluorescence: slight

Thanks!!!

Hi hy (lol!)

I''m wondering how you ran this on the HCA, I don''t see a depth. Maybe you just missed typing it?

It seems to be facing up (diameter) rather small, most likely due to the thick girdle, which will hide some weight, and possibly the depth. It is looking smaller than my 1.40, and that''s not good, just because, but also because you are paying for that 1.50 magic number, but you''re not getting the look.

Also, if your crown and pavillion angles are correct, they are not the best, I know you could do better.

Are you looking locally, or online?

Do have a link to the stone? Or the report number?

Hi Thanks!!

I''m looking it locally so don''t have a link to that rock.

For the depth %, I used the depth in the measurement divided by the diameter. Probably I''m wrong about that too :P

Yes I agree that the diameter is not so good too. I wonder if it would make a noticeable diff. when it''s 0.1 to 0.3mm bigger in diameter?

Yes, visually you would be able to see it. It''s not what I would call a huge difference, but what makes it worse is that diamonds have (as you may or may not know) what are called "magic numbers". That is where the price jumps per carat when it hits a certain weight. 1.50 is one of those, so you don''t want to pay all that extra money, and not get what you''re paying for, you know?

If your jeweler doesn''t have any on hand, have them call in some GIA EX and AGS0 (preferably) graded stones. If you do that, it would help you get a decent cut stone.

You want the diameter of a 1.5 ct. stone to be close to or greater than 7.4mm. I would scratch this one and look further.

Hi all,

Thanks for your comment on the previous rock.

I kept on looking and found this one. Is this one ok?

1.51C G SI2
7.44x7.46x4.42

Depth: 59.3%
Table: 61%
Crown: 33.5
Pav. : 40.6

Thanks in advance!

hy, since both the crown and pavillion angle are on the shallower side, it would most likely be better for a pendant. A stone with these kind of angles can possibly suffer from head shadow, and lack a bit in the contrast/scintillation department. Also, you don''t want the table larger than the depth.

Since you are shopping locally, try running potentials through the HCA first. Strive for a stone that has the x fall in the overlap area of AGS/GIA, or close to. That will help ensure you get a great stone.
