I found my ideal stone and purchased it from Excel (thanks Judah and Barry). They are awaiting shipping instructions. I want the stone placed in a Simon G setting (TR 160). They don''t work with Simon G so I have to go through someone else to get the job done. I have received the lowest quote from Kranichs. Has anyone worked with them? I''m not dead set on getting the very lowest price, and would be comfortable paying a few dollars more if need be to work with someone with a stellar reputation. They have suggested that I order the ring through them and have Excel send the stone directly to Simon G. Sound Kosher? I realize I can simply have the stone sent to me and work with a local B&M. Any suggestions or recommendations (per the wife...the setting is non negotiable).

Hi Bam! That is going to be a gorgeous ring!

Hopefully you''ll post a picture of the finished product when you get everything taken cared of! As for our experience, my then BF (now FI) bought my diamond from Solomon Brothers in Georgia. He recieved it in Seattle, Washington. He purchased my Henri Daussi setting from IDC (International Diamond Center) of Georgia. He paid IDC 1/2 of the cost and was told to mail the diamond to New York, where Daussi has his studio. There they custom made my setting to fit my diamond and Daussi mailed it back to IDC. When IDC recieved it, they called my FI and they arranged for it to be overnighted to him after they received the other half of the payment. I think that you should be fine sending your diamond straight from Excel to Simon G. The question is what you are comfortable doing. Does Simon G have to custom make the setting for your diamond? (That''s how it worked for Daussi) If not, and you''re more comfortable getting the setting locally and getting it set in the same store where you purchased the setting, well that is another option. If you go through the mail, make sure your diamond and your setting is insured and done via overnight delivery. I hope that helps! Good luck and please share pictures when you get the finished ring!

I appreciate your response...Unfortunately, Simon G does not deal direct with the public so I have to go through a vendor. The setting has to be modifed for the shape and I have been advised that it would be prudent to have them set the stone (it''s a heart shaped stone and there is a halo involved). I like the half the cost up front idea.

If you don''t mind watching the pot boil, insuring the two pieces separately with Jeweler''s Mutual through a local appraiser will also keep you safe; read about how this will keep you insured through the setting process.

There may be other ways to skin the cat, but it sounds like your solution of having Simon G set it would work. Adding the insurance...whether or not they say they would insure the stone, would in fact give you extra insurance.

Regards,

Henri Daussi is the same way as Simon G. Both designers require that you go through the vendor. If that''s the case, then see which vendor you''re more comfortable working with and ask the vendor how to go about sending the stone to Simon G. I think they''re definitely going to have to do this setting custom since the diamond is a heart shaped. Talk to the vendors in your area who are retailers for Simon G and see what their policy is in regards to payment. It''s possible to make a deal with them, like half now then half once the diamond and setting is at the jewelers. Also, if you go through on online vendor and that vendor isn''t in the same state as you, you won''t need to pay taxes on the merchandise which is always a good thing. In WA, tax is 9%. By buying my diamond and setting outside of WA, he didn''t have to pay the taxes on either. Check out the online vendors listed here in PS and see if any of them carry Simon G.

Luckyeshe- Regular Guy- Thanks for your input, it is greatly appreciated. This whole process started out so simple and turned into a mind bender! The more you learn and know, the more you realize how little you know and how much more there is to learn.
