Dear Pricescopers,
I would love your expert assistance in evaluating these potential diamonds. In general, we are looking for a 0.9-1ct diamond with excellent optical properties, H+ color, SI1-VS1 range clarity, round brilliant cut.

These diamonds are both GIA XXX although the reports are dated from 2007 (#1) and 2009 (#2). The HCA calculation is HCA 1.5 (X, X, X, VG) and HCA 2.8 (4 x VG). Our story is that a family friend who is a personal jewelry purchaser has selected these diamonds and thinks the first one in particular is a great buy (~$8500). The second stone is priced ~$1200 less. I've read a lot of cautionary tales about purchasing from personal connections and would love any input on that as well. We are far away from her so wouldn't really be able to see them in person. What do you think about the old certification dates? How about the 55% table on #1? We are also looking at online retailers (WF, GOG, BlueNile) for price comparison and quality comparison.

THANK YOU!! I have learned so much already from this site and all of you.

I have a couple months to find something along these lines ($8-10k) for my gf. I'd love to hear what the experts have to say about these stones. Violet12, can anyone you know see these stones in person?

i like #1 based on the specs.

Diamond 1 based on specs, and at $8500 with a 1.07/G VS2, sounds pretty good.

#1 seems like a fair deal. I got my 1.02ct/G/VS2 GIA-XXX for $8100. Verified IS, ASET, H&A images.

Though is anybody concerned the reports is 5 years old? Would be from a preowned/return?

I'm wouldn't worry about it. It's useless to wonder if you have a preowned diamond, IMO. Diamonds get recerted all the time, old cuts get re-cut to round brilliants and all kinds of things (diamonds are very valuable after all, they aren't considered disposable by most people) so you don't know unless you work with a vendor or line like Infinity that buys their own rough and then cuts it all in house that you are getting a brand new diamond. Preowned diamonds aren't flawed. People upgrade all the time, change their minds, whatever. If you love the stone and it works for you... just accept it.

Thanks for your comments! I do have a relative who can check them out side-by-side next week. Any suggestions about differences to look for? Potentially I could get an Ideal-Scope out to them; I'll have to check on their meeting time.

Is there anything that would make you choose *not* to go with #2, even if they look indistinguishable to the eyes of my relative?

Hi Violet- I just want to chime in here regarding purchasing from a friend or a friend or through personal connections. My advice is that you are not going to get a deal this way and if there are any issues down the road with the purchase, it will be more difficult to resolve because of the relationship. I am going through a similar situation right now and I really highly recommend that you 1) do not work through a personal connection for such a large purchase or 2) purchase a diamond sight unseen ESPECIALLY through a personal connection. If you have to purchase sight unseen due to your location, I would advise you to use a Priscescope vendor and not a friend of a friend.

I don't want to dampen your excitement. This is a wonderful time and I wish you the best!

One more thing to add... It's wonderful that you have such a kind relative who is willing to help you by looking at the stones but it's still no match for seeing the diamonds with your own eyes. No one else is as emotionally invested in this as you are and won't have the same attention to detail.

Can you take it to an independent appraiser and get aset and idealscope images?

Hi Md123456789 -- thanks for your concerns, and I share the same about not purchasing from a larger vendor and potentially getting some personal relationships in the mix. We'll know more later this week after a conference call with the seller.

Hi diamondguy12 -- yes, I would want it sent to an independent appraiser before purchasing, if we decide to go with this option. I'll check the pricescope list to see if there are names of recommended appraisers in the area.

Call them and makes sure they have and idealscope.
