Hi,

A local jewler called and told me that he found a triple excellent diamond that I''ve been looking for. But I was deeply disappointed with the HCA score which got a 5.1.

Could someone please look into this diamond to see if it''s worth it:
6.89 - 6.94 x 4.34 mm
1.27 carat
D color
VS1 clarity
Cut: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None
Table: 57
Depth: 62.8
Crown 35.5 degrees
Pavilion: 41.4 degrees
The girdle says: thin slightly thick (faceted)
There''s a 55% left of the table
A 15.5% inside the crown
A 44% inside the pavilion
There''s a 80% on the lower left hand side
None for cutlet

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Not worth it.

So I''m starting my search all over again. I had no choice but to head back to the diamond district (*sigh*)...
This diamond is similar to the one I found earlier, but more expensive =(
Here are the specs:
Measurements: 7.08 - 7.17 x 4.36 mm
Carat Weight: 1.32
Color Grade: D
Clarity Grade: VS1
Cut Grade: Excellent
Depth: 61.2 %
Table: 53 %
Crown Angle: 34.5°
Crown Height: 16 %
Pavilion Angle: 40.6°
Pavilion Depth: 42.5 %
Star length: 55 %
Lower Half: 75 %
Girdle: Thin, Faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None
Key: Crystal, Needle, Pinpoint - But I have no idea where these items are on the diamond yet.
The HCA returns a 0.8 which is suprisingly better than the 1.3 from the E diamond on good old gold.
It has an excellent on light return, fire, and scintillation, and a very good on spread.
From what I gather, it seems the hearts at the 12 and 6 were shifted to one side when looking at the diamond.
They''re asking for $18,500 which I think is a ridiculous price. But I have not negotiated yet and I have no idea how low they will go.
.8 !> 1.3

I don''t think the price is ridiculous...

The other diamond that I''m considering is from bluenile:
Measurements: 6.98 - 7.02 x 4.32 mm
Carat Weight: 1.31
Color Grade: E
Clarity Grade: VS1
Cut Grade: Excellent
Depth: 61.7 %
Table: 56 %
Crown Angle: 35°
Crown Height: 15.5 %
Pavilion Angle: 40.6°
Pavilion Depth: 42.5 %
Star length: 50 %
Lower Half: 80 %
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None
Key: Crystal, Cloud, and Pinpoint - According to the GIA report, there seems to be some key markings on the table.
Asking price is $16,719
The HCA also returns a 0.8.
It has an excellent on light return, fire, and scintillation, and a very good on spread.

I think my girlfriend and I are now confused because she now accepts the fact a D, VS1, three excellents, ideal cut, and no fluorescence are pretty slim and not a reality.

Is this diamond with a 53% table good? Even though 53% is in the ideal range, I was told 54% to 56% is the best.
In general, what is better....A D diamond with the symmetry being off or having a E diamond that has everything excellent?

I would appreciate a 53% or other smaller table in a D. In lower colors, you generally don''t want to cut very small tables (may make color more apparent) but you don''t have to worry about that with colorless. Smaller table, more fire! Yay. 54-56 is not ''the best.'' it all has to work together.

You can''t tell the difference between EX and VG symmetry with the naked eye. If it''s well-proportioned and everything works together, then VG symmetry=more money in your pocket!
Hi Julien,
I took a second look at this diamond at the store today. Could you elaborate more on the 53% table size. This is the only diamond that I have seen with a table size this small. I thought the diamond seemed to be smaller than the 1.32 carat size compared to others that I have seen. He placed the diamond on a scale and it did weigh 1.32. But I was told it is due to the table size making the diamond look "rounder" and possibly smaller. How would a small table size look better in a colorless diamond? I was litterally moving the diamond from one end of the table to the other without spotlights. =p I couldn''t see much difference or maybe I don''t know how to. But the diamond did seem to look "hallow" when looking straight from the top.

So, basically, your environment is white light. In order to produce fire, the light has to be bent (refracted.) A smaller table will mean that more of the crown is at an angle sufficient to produce fire.

It is not small for its weight. The 1.31 E has a smaller diameter.

And if you had a lower color, you might want to go for more BIC proportions (bigger table, shallower crown.)

If you have doubts, I would keep looking.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I''m not the one wearing the diamond ring. My girlfriend really likes it a lot. She thinks it looks "cute" that the diamond is really round with a small table.

In any case, I placed a deposit for this diamond. On my way home, I realized that there is no GIA number on the stone. How can I make sure the GIA report is for that stone? Do I bring it back to GIA lab? I''m nervous now.

Congrats on your purchase. You can get it appraised to see if it matches the cert.

Each of us likes something a little different. I think your girlfriend wanted specs that sound great to people and that is what she got. As long as she is happy - that is all that matters!

Thanks. I don''t want to be over confident about this stone yet. I only left a down payment. Until I get the stone in my hands, then I''ll consider it complete. But I want to give thanks to Julien and Lorelei who have been very helpful during this long process.

Why would I want to get this appraise? I prefer not knowing that I overpaid. =p.....or maybe I did under pay for this diamond? =)
In any case, I totally forgot about checking the GIA number on the stone. On the GIA report, it does not have any comments about inscription.

Should I bring this back to a GIA lab? If so, how much would it cost for them to check the report matching the stone?
