Hello, I am considering buying the following diamond:

I am being quoted $4680 for the diamond. I''d greatly appreciate your comments on price vs. quality of diamond:

EGL USA certified
Shape and Ct: round brilliant
Measurements: 6.44-6.41x4.07mm
depth: 63.3
table: 59
crown:15.3
pavilion:43.6
girdle: Medium to Sl. thick faceted
Culet: none
Finish:
polish: excellent
symmetry: very good
clarity grade: VS1
color grade: H
fluroscence: none

EGL USA is workable.

But, 5.2 on the HCA. Stop, do not pass go.

Review tutorial above under knowledge. Continue.

Regards,

I would say the price is not that bad, but the cut doesn't seem to be too good either. First, give angles rather than percentages. Second, it is too deep, third, the table is too large in m opinion, but from what I have seen I prefer small tables, and third, it might be too yellow for you. If you do a search on EGL and colors you will find that their H is would generally recieve a lower grade by AGS or GIA.

I would recommend shaving off about .2 mm, and getting a better cut, that way you can get a alot more beauty for the same price. The additional brilliance and light performance of a better cut will be MUCH more apparent than the .2mm loss in dimensions. That being said, for a couple hundred bucks more you could also get a decent cut AGS or GIA cert of VS2 clarity.

Otherwise, my "rough rock" self says keep looking. I am sure the stone isn't hideous or anything, but you can find better for your money I think, it just might take a little time.

If the score is 5.2 on the HCA, then you should pass.....there is a reason why the price is so low.

Yikes.
I did not realize this was not a good stone.

I am buying a better ring for my wife and did not know much about diamonds. She wanted a 1 carat ring, and I have a budget of $5000 for the diamond+ring (platinum plain ring)

I thought a VS1 color H, round cut was a generally good diamond. I had no idea of these ratios. I actually thought I was getting a great price at $5050 for the entire thing....

First, Welcome to Pricescope!!!

You have come to the right place to get the best quality diamond you can get for your money. This is my opinion.

The trusted Pricescope Vendors are the best to work with and the people on here will help you with your every need, so read and ask questions and enjoy.

I personally own an ACA round from WhiteFlash and I love it. But, you look around and ask questions and find a vendor you like and see what they can do for you.

Good Luck

Its not really a TERRIBLE price, but for the same price you can get what is probably an equal to better color and clarity appearance with a MUCH better cut. And if you can, then thats what you should do. Though remember there is a premium for the ACA diamonds from white flash. I did a search and found few options on blue nile, but BN doesn't offer as many services as the other vendors do.
I ran a search on James allen, but all of those in the price range were some pretty "poorly" cut (by price scope member's standards) GIA certs.
Also, remember when you are running searches at PS vendor websites to run a search from the pricescope home page. Using the homepage will list diamonds with the Pricescope discount. One of the above posted links takes you to a 5200 dollar diamond, but with the price scope discount it is actually 49something. Of course with the 450-500 dollars for the platinum ring you will be over your budget, but again, that stone includes the "A Cut Above" premium with it. There are going to be many viable options that don't carry that name with them, and are just as well cut and just as beautiful a stone. feel free to post your findings up here and I know many people will help out in anyway we can, at least enough to get you thinking and researching. (to make things easier, look for AGS 0 cut grades, that is pretty reliable in narrowing down percentages, but generally carries a premium with it as well.)

NOTE TO THE MODERATOR: I assume mentioning the PS discounts is ok right?

If you''re looking for alternate options, available on this board, two it could be easy to consider, on either side of your current price, are this one ($4330 wire priced) or this one ($5146 wire priced).

Everyone has given you good advice and welcome

Don''t rush into anything, buying a great diamond can take as much research as any other large purchase and cut is KEY for it''s beauty!!! Look at the diamonds that Ira and Skippers have posted, these are the sort of cut proportions etc you need to be considering. Stick around and read the tutorial, also ask any questions you may have, I promise you it will be time well spent!
