Hellooo LIW!

I've been reading posts on PS for a few months now, but mostly stone-related until this evening. I googled 'pre-engagement counseling' and just spent the last -oh- two hours reading LIW posts so I decided it's time to join! I'm a 29 yr old psychology graduate student dating a 32 yr old middle school science teacher and coach. I know this is atypical and I really hope y'all don't read this and think "Uh oh, she'll be gone soon soon enough" but we've only been six months and are already talking rings! I realize this is really soon by the standard timetable but we're older, know who we are and what we want (and what we don't want) and it just feels so good!! :-D He first asked me about rings a few weeks ago and we've been having fun looking since then. At this point, he's planning to design a ring using a lady we found on Etsy. I'm sure we'll have some rude awakenings in that quest but we both take things in stride so I'm not worried about it. I love the Edwardian period but also want a completely plain, super thin band. I'm older and never really fantasized about my wedding when I was younger but I've always had fun looking at rings. BF's really getting into this ring designing thing, though, so I'm super excited! :) Anyways, I should prolly get back to my thesis (or more likely go to bed). Can't wait to wait with everyone! :)

Welcome! I think you could manage a delicate Edwardian style ring and get the best of both worlds! Do you mind sharing who you plan on working with on Etsy?

I'm a newbie too :wavey: It's exciting to be designing a ring together, isn't it? Like you, I've never really been one of those girls who have been fantasising about their weddings since they were little girls. To be perfectly honest, one wedding dress pretty much looks like another to me... But i do love my bling and i've really enjoyed customising and designing my e ring with my SO and I hope you enjoy it too. All I can say is take your time and go with your instincts. Here's to LIW-dom (though hopefully not for too long lol!)

Ooh, I love her work! I want a pair of those sapphire/diamond hoops!

I don't know how you feel about different shapes, but she has a ruby pear with a halo that I love. I think a diamond pear with a halo will instantly give you the old-school feel you want.

Welcome! Isn't it just so much fun when your BF is excited about the ring too? I know my BF isn't into jewelry at all so he isn't the kind of person to design something (especially not something I will be wearing every day for the rest of my life!). But, he knows how much I love it and is excited to get me something that will make my face light up!

Welcome! Are you expecting the ring anytime soon?

Thanks for the tips Snoopkat! SO and I are getting to the point where I'm going to take a step back from the process (so there can be more surprise) but I'll keep reminding him of the virtues of patience and perfectionism. ;-)

Maebelle, that is gorgeous! (Re: Miss Heigl's ring and Vickie's design). I honestly never even considered pear but there's no reason not to! Although I will say that I'm a bit ocd about 'straightness'. For instance, it'll take me an hour to hang a picture and I used a ruler to underline textbooks. Anyway, on my ring fingers, shapes that aren't round appear to sit crooked?! I'm going to attempt my first pic post (hopefully of many to come!) to illustrate. Here's a pick of one of my late grandfather's cuff links I had made to a ring. See how crooked that is?! I realize I'm crazy but it bothers me Lol. I think that is my only concern with pear...

Mayflower, it is soo exciting! I'd be lying if I said I'm not a little nervous about what he ultimately comes up with but I'm extremely excited.

Oupeargirl, I guess "anytime soon" is somewhat relative but I don't anticipate a proposal for several months, if not more. He is so ready (and so am I) but we have time. Plenty of time. :) I still have a 10-month internship (beginning Aug) to go before I'm finished with graduate school. We also plan to participate in some type of pre-engagement counseling and (I'm pretty sure) he hasn't spoken with my parents yet. My mom's in SC, my dad's in FL, and SO is in AL so going to talk to them will take a bit of prep. :) PLUS the ring design!? How long does that typically take??

if I wear my rings too close to the bottom of my finger (on the ring finger) They do end up seeming tilted. I think the reason that your grandfather's cufflink ring looks a bit tilted because it's so large. At least try some different shaped diamonds on thin bands. You might be surprised how much you love them.

One caveat though is that tilted things don't bother me as much as others. I wear a star sapphire cabochon every single day which was my mother's, the stone is not on center and the star makes that very obvious, but I love it anyway.

So beautiful!! :) I wish it didn't bother me so much. You'd think my inability to draw a straight line unaided would have broke me of my things-need-to-be-straight affliction long ago. Ha :)

hello, and welcome! I've just added myself to the LIW list today :)

I read that your SO is a middle school science teacher! That's so cool, because I am currently a student teacher aspiring to be just that! I hope the economy isn't hitting his district as badly as it is here!

But onto more fun topics... It's so great that he is excited about designing the ring and everything! Any idea what your SO is thinking in terms of design? You said you are planning to step back from the process now, so I guess you're leaving it all up to him?
