Hi everyone, I''ve been lurking for some time and am amazed at how helpful this site is. I am currently in the process of purchasing a stone and would like some input on this particular one. Although I have seen it in person and it is eye clean, I''d like to have some kind of confirmation that it''s worth buying. Any opinion is very much appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

Sorry, here's the GIA report.
Hi Tren, I don't see it. Can you give us the numbers off the GIA cert?
1.gif
We need Depth %, Table %, crown and pavilion angles.

I''m sorry, I thought I had attached the pic.
Here''s the info:
Round Brilliant
6.55-6.59x4.03mm
I
SI2
polish very good
symmetry very good
Fluorenscence non
depth 61.3
crown 35.0
pavilion 41.0
table 59%
girdle medium faceted

Thanks!

Thanks Skippy! I did like the way it looked in person, but I have a hard time telling since I think all diamonds are beautiful! The asking price is $4,500, which is around the ball park of the price comparison I did. I''m not sure if I should keep looking? The GIA report says the cut grade is "excellent", but the HCA indicates "very good"?

I would consider looking a little more. Would you be interested in buying online? What color, clarity and size are you looking for and carat weight?

A true ca/pa combo of 35/41 gives slight table leakage. I think you could do better.

Thanks! I''ll keep looking. I''m looking for G-I, eye clean SI, around 1 - 1.25 ct. My budget is around $5500 - 6000. This is actually a gift for my mother, she''s been tirelessly taking care of our newborn baby so we can be worry-free at work. Her 60th birthday is just around the corner, so I''d like to say thank you in a "big" way. I''ll continue to post the potential stones and hopefully find a winner soon! Thanks again!

Wow your mother will be so surprised! Are you going to use the stone for a ring or a pendant? That may help you decide on what the most important factors on in the quality search . . .

I hope she''ll be pleasantly surprised! The stone will be made into a ring with a halo setting w/ a pave band, so it gives the illusion of a bigger diamond. Trying to up the bling factor a bit!

Welcome Tren!

Thank you for your very kind words, we try hard to provide a welcoming and helpful atmosphere, so it is good to know it is appreciated!

Ditto the above, this diamond appears to be around the danger zone to be considered a steep deep and may not be the best performer, you may not see much if any difference with viewing the diamond in a jewellery store, but images such as Idealscope may show it up, or you could notice light leakage in some wearing conditions.

Also GIA Excellent cut grade is wide, and can allow for these steep deep combos, so it is best to evaluate each diamond on it's own proportions.

I would look for a diamond closer to these suggested proportions - your depth in that diamond is fine by the way but look for -

table - 54 - 57%
crown angle 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6 - 41 degrees. Steeper angles such as the diamond above ( 35/ 41) and shallower ( 34/ 40.6) need careful evaluation to make sure they work well for that particular diamond. Idealscope images are very useful for this, plus careful scrutiny of the diamond itself.

Thank you both. The suggested stones all look great! The only thing I''m worried about is that an AGS I might appear warmer than a GIA I, please correct me if I''m misinformed. I know I don''t have a big budget, color is more important to me than clarity. The guideline for the proportions is very helpful!

Good afternoon Tren, an AGS I will not look warmer than a GIA I. Both AGS and GIA are great labs, you can read about them in the Pricescope tutorial http://diamonds.pricescope.com/labs.asp

You can look for a well cut stone since cut is the most important using this helpful tool. When searching selection Excellent - Excellent for cut.

Ditto, AGSI should be the same as a GIAI, EGL is a little softer than both though. With a well cut stone I color shouold face up nice and white. What a nice thing to do for your mum!

Thanks for the reassurance, good to know that AGS is as strict as GIA on the color grading. My mother''s always been amazing when it comes to the family, I hope I can be nearly as good of a parent as she is.
I have found one below, following Skippy''s advise, what do you think? The inclusions looks like they can be covered up by the prongs.
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1112006.asp?b=16&a=12&c=77&cid=131
looks like a nice diamond if the inclusions are ok.
Much better than the orginal one in this thread.
Ask for an IS image and post it to double check everything.

Ah Tren, what a sweet son you are! Can''t wait to see the Idealscope image.

Actually I''m her daughter, maybe my sn sounds a bit masculine.

Sorry for the confusion.
I called earlier today and spoke to Josh at James Allen, he told me the stone is in their NY office and to email him my info, so I can get "approved" to view it in person. I''m waiting for his reply, then will request the IS image.
Thank you all for guiding me to find a nicer one, I would''ve ended up with a mediocre stone if it weren''t for you!

Thanks!
I'm still waiting for the IS for that stone and expect to have it sometime next week.
Meanwhile I asked to see another one and they had the IS for it. http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-947978.asp?b=16&a=12&c=77&cid=131
I was told that it's not 100% eye clean, but the inclusions are white and off the table.
What do you think?
Hi Tren
1.gif
, the crown angle should be between 34 and 35 and the one you posted is 32. I would wait for the IS on the other stone.

Will do, thanks Skippy!
