Hello,

This is my first post, although I have been learning from existing posts on pricescope for several years.

I got engaged last year and am now married. My husband involved me in the process of choosing my engagement ring and we both learned about diamonds before buying.

Today I came across the HCA tool for the first time when I was playing about online. I am a bit concerned that my stone gets a HCA rating of 2.3 when we thought that we had bought an excellent diamond (we went for quality over quantity within our budget, and viewed rings in person before purchasing).

The stone is GIA rated as triple excellent and, whilst I know that the GIA criteria are quite broad, it also seemed to fit closely with AGS ideal criteria.

I have a 0.45 carat G VS1 stone. The proportions are as follows:

TD: 62.1%
TS: 56%
CA:35.0
CH: 15.5%
PA: 41.0
PD:43.5%
SL: 55%
LH: 80%
Girlde: thin to medium

Those of you who know a lot more about diamonds than me, has my husband been sold an inferior stone here? Since receiving the ring I've never compared it to other GIA excellent cut stones. Is there a way to measure the fire and sparkle and check that we've not been mislead or foolish in the selection? Would I know if it wasn't as sparkly as it should be just from looking at it?

Thank you in advance!

Agreed.

Remember, the HCA tool is used to eliminate likely poor performing diamonds and help you narrow down your selection, particularly when you are unable to inspect it in person before purchasing and the only info offered is the diamond report. A score of 2.3 does not mean your stone is inferior... based on your particular diamond's specs above, your diamond is likely a real sparkler. But, for those who are seeking a diamond to purchase and come across a promising candidate that scores a 2.3 on the HCA, it may be worthwhile to also obtain an Aset / IdealScope / Sarin / professional independent appraiser opinion on the stone prior to purchase or during the return period if already purchased.

If you want to further check your diamond's performance, buy an IdealScope and check it out for yourself. (I think IdealScopes are relatively inexpensive, $25 ?)
