I am a novice to diamond purchase but I need to get a ring for my wife on our 10th anniversary. I have finalized a ring at local jewlery store in NJ. So I need expert advice from Guru''s before I pull the plug. I will appreciate if you can advice soon as I need to make decision soon.

Weight : 2.06 Cts.
Shape and Cut : Round Brilliant
Polish : Very Good
Symmetry : Very Good
Clarity : SI2
Color : I
Fluorescence : None
Depth : 60.2 %
Table Width : 63%
Crown Height : 14 %
Pavilion Depth : 42%
Girdle Tickness : Medium, Faceted
Certification : EGL

Price of Diamond : $10,500

I think you might have the crown % off. It that suppossed to be 34%?

If you plug it into the cut advisor with 34% it comes back with only fair light return and poor fire and scintillation.

They''re a bit smaller but a great cut

Hi Novice!

I would pass on this diamond, in fact I wouldn't buy it at any price, very good chance of it showing a fish eye, a nasty effect where it literally looks like a fish's eye seen at certain angles. Read more on fish eye here.

The table is very large on this diamond too which doesn't help, I would look for a diamond with a table between 54 - 58% if possible. Do you prefer to buy from a jewellery store or are you open to buying online?

Also GIA or AGS are the top two labs, EGL are considered to be soft on grading compared to them in some cases and some branches of EGL more than others. Read more here.

Here are some figures you can use as a guide to help you find a well cut round diamond.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4% ( don't go past this otherwise you can end up losing face up size, the exception is for fiery ideal cuts)
table - 54- 57%/58%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

From expert John Pollard.

With that said, here's a "Cliff's Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).

Isabella, this is correct, EGL use percentages for crown and pavilion.
