I saw this new subforum and I thought what a nice place it could be to post a thread for those of us who play an instrument, ourselves, or simply enjoy music in any of its forms.

If you have music as one of your hobbies/professions/someone in your family likes to perform, please consider sharing here so more members of PriceScope can enjoy. :)

I'll aim to add to the thread when I have a chance to record!

I learnt to play the piano when I was young, got my Grade 8 at 14, thanks to my parents.

Not played since I left school due to no access to a piano.

However, I have tried to keep my knowledge of what I had learnt alive by singing in choirs and learnt to dance etc...

Currently learning to play the clarinet with the aim to play the alto saxophone too once I am sufficiently good at the former so that I could switch between the two with ease.

Got a decent alto sax already and tried to learn to play that a couple of years ago, and decided to concentrate of getting better with the clarinet first.

I upgraded my cheapo student plastic clarinet that I bought years ago when I tried to learn it, just before the Covid pandemic, and the professional wooden piece is such a joy to play compared with the student instrument. It was one of my best purchases to date.

I would love to be able to play in a band eventually. However, living in a medium size town means the opportunity to do that is not great. Have to wait and see.

Not planning on doing any exams as my exam days are long gone! :lol-2:

DK :))

back in intermediate school we did music appreation -usually of classical music -my maths teacher was in the choir of the big Anglican catherdrial in town
we listened to stuff like the hall of the mountain king and Balero and thernt the stories behind the music

my high school made music copulsary in the first year and we had to play an instrument and we learnt music theory
i am forever greatful for that
tuitonan i think was free, as was instrument rental, you just had to buy the music book -also you got an hour a week out of class to go to the leassons !!

i had never learnt music before and did really well in the theory in the first year, in the 2nd year we had a different teacher .....and it didnt go as well

i really wanted to play the trumpet but you had to have a second choice so i ended up with the french horn, not a great choice for a kid as it doesnt get the melody very often in an orchestra and then it is hard, usually too hard for a newbie
in the 2nd year they put you in the school orchestra which was fun and educational
i always get excitted when i see the french horns in an orchestra

anyway i took piano leassons for many years, i dont play any mpore because like DK i dont have a piano
i may never have been cut out to be a concert panist but it mage me realize the tallent in other people and the effort and time they put in to be that good
i enjoyed it very much but i only ever played for myself

I was dying to learn piano-- I was utterly enamored of pianos-- but we didn't have the space for one in our home, and keyboards weren't really a thing back then. So in 5th grade, my parents got me a student flute instead. My greatest memory of it is my school's music teacher having to untangle my long braids from the valves and keys.

I would take up piano now, but my basal thumb joints are arthritic, and it would just hurt.
