Gosh, where do I start?
Growing up with 4 older brothers was a lot of fun! That may explain why I’m such a tomboy and a dork. I remember climbing trees, borrowing my brothers’ clothes without their knowledge, looking forward to the San Francisco 49ers games (when they used to be good) and tossing the football around the backyard. I also remember having crushes on my sisters’ boyfriends! I would get so excited when they came over to visit, and they would tease me until I was red! Even though I spent my teenage years in the 90’s, my soul belongs in the 70’s and 80’s. Growing up with older siblings, I was surrounded with music from that era. Gosh, I remember Air Supply, Elton John, Barry Manilow, Queen, Pink Floyd, Dan Fogelberg, Frank Sinatra, James Taylor, Carole King, Lionel Richie, Nat King Cole, The Beatles, Chicago, Simon and Garfunkle, etc. Some people may think these artists are cheesy, but I think they are classic! These artists actually had real talent, and their songs meant something!
Fastforward to my high school years, I went to Franklin High School in Stockton, California. I was lucky to have a close relationship with my Mom because it definitely helped me survive the peer pressure. In my neighborhood alone, 5 of the girls that I grew up with had a baby by the age of 16. My parents instilled in me the value of a college education and preparing for the future. Kudos to them, because all of my siblings, including me, graduated from college. Values and open communication are all well and good, but try convincing your raging hormones to wait when you are 15! And all you think about is S-E-X! And you are surrounded by hot boys with raging hormones! But FEAR was stronger than hormones. My parents firmly reminded me, “If you are grown enough to have sex and get pregnant, then you are grown enough to move out of the house and have your own family. We will not be raising your baby for you. And you can forgot about college.”
YIKES!!!
Also, I could not bear to disappoint my dad or my brothers. They would never look at me the same way if their baby sister became “deflowered”.
My then best guy friend of 5 years, who was in the Army at the time, confessed that he was interested in me as more than a friend. And at the same time, Dave and I were getting to know each other, and I really started to like him. I was in quite a pickle! Who do I pick? My best friend of 5 years or this awesome guy that I’m still getting to know? When I told Dave about my best friend’s intentions, he asked me out on a date. I remember him picking me up from my apartment in Long Beach. He stood at the door with a single-stem red rose. He remembered that I love red roses! We were supposed to go to this water-side restaurant by the Queen Mary, but we got lost. So we ended up going to Huntington Beach. I can still hear the waves from the ocean and I can still feel the wind on my face as we kissed for the first time. There was something so…magical about that moment, as if that was exactly where we were supposed to be. He knew I had to make a decision, and he said something that I will never forget for as long as I am alive.
He looked deep in my eyes and said, “How do you know that God didn’t put me here to be with you? If you don’t choose me, you will probably regret it for the rest of your life.”
Then it dawned on me. I pictured another woman having a happy life with this man, and I had this sick feeling in my stomach! Someone else could be married to MY husband! I was not going to let that happen!
Currently, I an elementary teacher. Dave is a Spanish teacher and soccer coach. We both live in Gainesville, Florida. We also have two wonderful, rambunctious Labrador Retrievers. Chico is our “first born”, he’s 5 years old. Nunu is the baby of the family, he’s 2 years old. We treat them just like our real children, except we can leave them home alone without being reported to CPS. We used to want children until we started working with them. Right now, we’re undecided. Dave is definitely happy with things the way they are right now, and he doesn’t want to change things. I love being a teacher, and I’m not sure if I’m ready to give that up to be a mom yet.

Florida is gorgeous!!!![]()
See how much we learn about each other....this is really fun! Lyn, my Mom was from Florida and we have family all over the state. I love it there! The white sandy beaches are unlike any other that I''ve seen. Southern Florida is much different from the Panhandle, but I love it all.Date: 4/8/2009 9:38:48 PM

Lori, thanks again, you are a sweetheart!!! I enjoy reading your posts as well! I''m tempted to post a pic of myself, just for you, but I''m not sure if I''m ready to give up my anonymity yet.![]()
Lliang, what a small world that your brother and BF went to UF! My sister-in-law went there to get her masters in law. It''s really an awesome school, and the campus is beautiful. How did you like growing up in Miami? Where do you live now? Gosh, I would love to move down there someday. There''s so much culture and life there, and the beaches are just gorgeous.
Originally, I did not want to move to Florida. I had to be dragged kickin and screamin for 2000 miles in 2004. Everything I loved and knew was in California. I was so scared to move and I did not know anyone except Dave''s family. I never even met them at that point! But Dave believed that we could have a better life in Florida, and we would have a better chance of becoming teachers. He even believed that we would be able to buy a house and get a dog soon. My goodness, he was right. Little by little, everything fell into place. We love Florida. We''ve lived in Gainesville for 5 years now. It took some getting used to the humidity, but it''s not that bad over the years. There''s so much wildlife here, and it''s so peaceful. The quality of life is also better compared to where we lived in California.
I remember when we had to lock our doors when we lived in Southern Cal. We even had to use two clubs with our cars.![]()
Here, we don''t worry about a thing. Oh, and we much prefer the hurricanes over earthquakes.
At least we get a heads-up when a hurricane is coming.
