My personal preference is platinum now. I used to prefer white gold because I felt it was lighter and therefore more comfortable to wear. Unfortunately, I had a problem with my white gold setting. It developed a small black mark in between two side diamonds. Two jewelers told me the problem was difficult to fix due to the location of the mark so I had my diamond reset into a platinum setting and I''m very happy with it. It looks very white and feels substantial. Not too heavy but you definitely know it''s there!
Tons of threads on this topic if you use the search tool! My personal preference is platinum, but it is just that, a personal preference. I like the weight, the patina it develops, the fact that it''s hypo-allergenic (I suffer from a nickel allergy), I don''t have to have it rhodium-plated when the rhodium starts to wear off, etc. If you want to explore palladium that is an option as well...similar benefits as platinum but not as heavy, a bit more cost-effective, etc.
I am always asking strangers what metal they chose and if they have regrets. I never get complaints on WG. Not kidding. But the other day a Lowes employee answered with the fact that she hates her platinum ring. It has been repaired 3 times in 6 months. I was puzzled and asked why? She said she really works rough in her set...and the prongs are wearing down. And stretching out. I again was puzzled and said, but I thought Platinum was recommended for the prongs even in white gold as it is hardier. She said...well what ever metal this ring is it is wearing out on me.
I have learned here on PS that Plat has something like a memory. If it starts out in a shape of 7mm width in the prong area...and the stone is 6 mm...the metal is going to want to go back to the 7mm shape and will do so until it is trained to stay at the 6mm. Please correct me if I misunderstood this...memory I think is what they refer to it as.
It is possible the jeweler on the Lowes ring used a softer alloy or even that it is white gold and she really doesn't know what it is. But it did have a patina that looked like a nickel. She said there aren't many jewelers in our town that can polish plat patina away. So I lean towards the belief it is platinum. I will be going back in soon, and I will make a beeline to the lawn and garden department for more details. Funny where I get my facts. Imagine the hardware store for jewelry advice.
I''m one of the strange ones who prefers white gold. The whiteness of platinum doesn''t seem to flatter my skin tone. White gold seems to be a ''softer'' shade of white metal that appears more flattering to me. Yellow gold is too yellow; platinum is too white; white gold seems to be the perfect in-between choice. I have never had any problems with prongs breaking, wearing down (but I don''t sleep with my e-ring) or my white gold jewellery turning yellow.
I''m in the midst of deciding myself. Platinum is so popular, and in advertising, clearly the preferred medium. I just had my new EC set in a (supposedly temporary) white gold solitaire. I got a new wedding band in platinum. I plan to keep the white gold setting and compare the two. I have not liked the way I''ve seen friends'' plat. bands turn a dull looking gray. So I''m curious to see the difference between my two rings and how they wear over time.
