I purchased a setting from a local jeweler which is 14k white gold and currently has 14k white gold prongs. I will be purchasing a 1ct cushion cut from a different online company to place in that setting. The jeweler where I bought the setting basically told me that I should use platinum prongs which is an additional fee, however from what I have heard and read online there appears to be contradictory opinions if this is necessary. Should I consider upgrading to platinum prongs with a 1ct cushion cut or is the local jeweler just trying to upsell me?

It is a much better metal for prongs. He's right.

Do you need help looking for a cushion?

What's your budget?

Is there a concern with platinum prongs that as it dulls and turns into its natural patina that it will look out of place compared to the white gold for the rest of the setting? I would imagine they look the same at the beginning but not sure how it would look a few years down the road.

No. It should be fine. Also I would ask for Stuller X1 alloy of white gold. As it never needs plating. You can get it in 18kt or 14kt.
