FI and I went shopping for wedding bands over the weekend. He found two rings that he liked. One was platinum and was about $2500 and the other was titanium and was $250. He likes the style of the titanium one more (although both are pretty similar) and is leaning towards that one. He says though that if the platinum could be made in the same style he would like that ring just as much. So, not knowing too much about either metal (besides the fact that my e-ring is platinum), what are the pros and cons of both. Is it worth the extra cost to go with the platinum? Will either of the rings fare better in the long term? Thanks!

We asked our jeweler about Titanium too. He told us he could do it for us, but wanted us to know the negative points about Titanium. Specifically, if you injure your hand or finger, it''s nearly impossible to cut the ring off your hand. And, if you gain weight, you can''t have the ring stretched or re-sized ever again.

We decided not to go with the Titanium as a result.

I hadn''t seen anyone post about this issue before, so I thought I''d see what people thought about these concerns.

I read on a different jewelry board from a ER nurse that in case of emergency, they can still remove a titanium or even a tungsten ring. She mentioned that it may not be as easy as gold or platinum but they can still cut it off.

The main price difference comes from the rarity of the metal and the cost of fabrication. Platinum being the rarest of all, it''s the most expensive. Titanium is more easily available in the market but the fabrication is still not as easy as gold so that''s how the jewelers justify the pricing. Jewelers can size them but not as flexible as gold or platinum so they are limited to only small adjustments.

One other aspect between platinum and titanium is keeping their value. Platinum will retain its worth much better than titanium will.
