How much is a typical platinum spacer? I've very excited about having a custom engagement ring and wedding set crafted, and I'm sure it's going to be worth every dollar (lots of dollars), but I'm unsure about the necessity and cost for a platinum spacer.

You may not even need one. Are you still considering mark Morrell? he may have enough metal protecting his rings that you won't need one. But the kind of little spacers you are talking about are not expensive.

This is not my favorite because I prefer rounded ones, but here is one at $269:

I like them rounded like this, but they aren't showing a platinum one at the moment:

I am working with Mark Morrell, and we're very excited about the project. He will be creating the DJ set using 6-pt side stones.

It sounds silly to ask about the spacer because at the end of the day $600 is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of the entire set and centerstone, and I'm confident MM is charging a fair price, but I just don't know if they are necessary or how much custom work goes into crafting them. MM said that a prior client that he crafted a similar set for used a spacer, though I never asked him if he actually recommended the set.

So, those who have purchased a spacer in the past, are you glad you did? Did you stop wearing it eventually? Do you feel like it protected your jewelry?

I'd just make sure that MM designs the ring to not need a spacer. They do work and we often recommend the if wearing a diamond band but I do prefer wedding sets with no spacer.

For whatever it's worth, I've been wearing an 18k white gold engagement ring with a 14k white gold channel-set band. Even just metal-to-metal, there are grooves on the basket of my e-ring on both sides, worn there by the wedding band. Unless your e-ring setting sits high and your wedding band sits low, there's always a risk that metal against metal will cause damage, let alone diamond girdles vs. metal.

I was looking at these as options but another thing to think about is whether Palladium can serve your purpose, it is very similar to Platinum for color and hardness and makes for a much cheaper ring given it is <1/2 the price as Platinum

Actually, that is a very good idea. Platinum is soft and I really wonder if a 1mm band will stay round in platinum.

Palladium does sound like a good idea! I'll ask MM about his thoughts regarding the softness of platinum for a spacer. I have attached a picture of the set with a spacer to give you a better idea on the expected width. The picture shows a cushion diamond whereas our diamond is round - otherwise should be very similar since this set also uses 6-pt stones instead of the 10-pt stones in the original MJ set.

I am interested in hearing what the thoughts were about palladium as a spacer. Thanks

I just ordered a white gold spacer for a plat set. I mostly wasn't sure how much I'd like the look so didn't want to spend too much on it in case I changed my mind.
